If you give at least some examples of what you consider "human rights policies" ?

Even if I grew up in a european country, where death penalty (which is not part of the human rights policy) is no longer an option to punish criminals, I do believe in this "harsh" treatment.

Let me give you an example. In Geneva, an Algerian man raped 17 women after have being released several times by the Justice. As an sylum seeker, he couldn't be sent back to Algeria because his life would have been threatened. So basically, human rights policies provides the shelter for such a worm, while they couldn't provide safety for 17 innocent women.

I do hope that some human rights (like freedom of speech, freedom of association, social justice) can make through in China, but some others, like the abolition of death penalty, need to be kept alive.

MissA:

I'm sure there's a choice between death and him being released. Prison, for example?

Yes i believe they will because people will demand that they do. And the internet will not allow things to go unreported. I hope they dont go too far like they have in the West though, where a vocal minority can disrupt things that are for the general good of the vast majority of people, or where the laws make others responsible for acts that cause injury even where the person should have been able to forsee or be responsible for their own safety. This has got to the point where litigation and it's associated cost has become a joke that just feeds lawyers, clogs up courts and encourages scamers.

The CCP will not ease restrictions of basic freedoms until it comes to a point where their power is threatened by people who want those freedoms.

sangoku; When people talk about human rights abuses they don't just mean the death penalty. They talking about, for example, black prisons. Where Chinese people go to complain about something and end up in detention in a warehouse somewhere until they're scared enough that they stay quiet.

@nevermind, if you read my comment that's the reason I asked crimochina to be a bit more explicit about "human rights policies".

His question is too vague to get a straight answer or at least debate on the topic.

Since in your point of view, black prisons are in opposition to the basic tenets of human rights, then Crimochina could formulate his question as : Will china ever really adopt and follow through with human rights policies in terms of Black Prison?

Don't you think so?

@Sangoku, I just can't get my head around the major contradiction that the law says it is illegal to kill, yet it gets away with killing people...even if they are criminals. Nobody has the right to take away someone's life...whether it's an individual or a government. Death penality is not a solution, it's also a crime.

death penalty is clearly not a violation of human rights even people who are against it know that. the sad fact of the matter is some people are better of dead their deeds are evidence of that.
i thought everyone had a clear understanding of what human rights are speak freely without fear. not have your freedom/property/life taken away with just cause. equality
remember human rights are different from civil rights or democracy

I consider the death penalty a violation of human rights. I don't like the idea of governments getting to say who lives or dies, period. They are too incompetent.

MissA:

I'm gonna go along with my man Tolkien on this one:

"Many that live deserve death. And some die that deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then be not too eager to deal out death in the name of justice, fearing for your own safety. Even the wise cannot see all ends"

And you're right, many governments are not even that wise to start off with....

@nevermind So you think that the guy who killed 77 people in Norway deserves his 21 year prison sentence instead of death? People like that are filthy animals and deserve to die.

nevermind:

No, people like that are CRAZY and should be studied.

beaufort, I think a guy like the man in Norway need to be locked up an studied for the rest of their lives so we can hopefully prevent future incidents. As well, the guy is clearly mentally ill.

I have read about stories a few times this year where if a guy stabs, molests or kills someone else he must be mentally retarded....surely he's not just a normal Chinese citizen.

Accountability anyone??

nevermind:

Depends on the circumstances. Kill one person in a fight or botched robbery.... you're a murderer. Carefully plan the systematic slaughter of 77 people, you're a nutcase.
