Q: Will China stop hunting VPNs soon?
Seriously, this whole VPN thing is driving me insane.
I need my VPN for my studies.... I need a working OpenVPN client to survive in this country.
I bought Astrill a few months ago. I don't know if the problem of OpenVPn is affecting all VPN providers here in China,.. is it?
I was angry at Astrill's poor customer service but I know the major problem can't be on Astrill's side because it was working flawlessly a while back. PPTP, LPTP, IPsec, OpenVPN servers were all fast and working...
Is the cause the transition in Chinese government? Will they stop soon or is this here to stay?
I'd like to know if anyone else is being seriously affected by this and any solutions if possible? Thanks.

First, re Astrill -- there was an article about Astrill in the Washington Post the other day. In the end, after reading through about eight paragraphs, it became clear that Astrill does not have a work around for the problem. The only thing that they did confirm was their service was effectively being blocked and reblocked in China.
The G F W has been tweaked to interdict firewalls although I have been made aware of at least that still does work but it is not for PC users, however. IMHO, I do not think that Beijing will reverse this policy anytime soon.
Being affected by it? Of course, for sure -- no New York Times, no lots of other things, no Google on occasion and the lot.
It may lighten up, it may not, but they can't completely block all of them because Chinese businesses need them as well. It's part of the reason why I couldn't continue to live in China. Good luck.
VPNs are still permitted, but only if registered in China. I would assume that means the government can monitor all data going through, including confidential information that China could use for it's own purposes.
Probably not for a while. For all its talk about reform, the government certainly seems to have its head firmly shoved up its own ass.
I surely agree with the poster above on this item. Things have been tightening up around here, remarkbly so, and many expected a kind of "Prague Spring" to settle in but instead it looks a bit like another "Siberian Winter".
If you have a Mac, however, there is great hope for you.
Hey, I'm an Astrill user too and I have been able to do most things through OpenWeb mode. But for that rare need when you have to have OpenVPN mode I decided to buy Hush Tunnel. $5 a month and you can stop anytime. Give it a try because I cannot see the GFW ruling on VPN's being changed real soon and I see that Astrill has, as yet, to come up with a work around.
