Q: Will Chinese eventually stop eating dog meat altogether?

Just read how animal activists managed to cancel a 'dog meat festival' (disgusting!) by lobbying local governments online. It was encouraging to see that more and more people are anti-dog meat here, but I wonder if they will ever succeed to fully eradicate the tradition.

1st this is not the only country that eats dog-meat.

2nd I don't support the act but I don't feel strong enough about it that I will do something to stop it altogether.

3rd as per your question, no othey will not. You think no one eats dog meat where you come from?

Lolitta2:

Nobody in my country would even dream of eating a dog. In the West we have a saying that goes "A dog is man's best friend." Obviously, that's a total alien concept to you. Do you eat dolphin as well? Wouldn't surprise me. Morals are just out of the window among some people these days.

GoldenBoy:

If they have eaten dog meat in the west it would have been unknowingly or not at all. As far as eating dog is concerned, dog is just another animal and a different type of meat. It's cheap and I'm sure this tradition started when people had no choice but to eat dog or starve. As for saying eating dog is immoral, I don't think that anyone here has the right to call the Chinese unmoral for having different customs. It seems most of us westerners have a superiority complex or we just choose the wrong words to express ourselves. What is morally correct in the west doesn't apply here and eating dog is definitely one of those things which is not immoral. More and more Chinese people have pets nowadays and it is only a question of time until they regard the dog as mans best friend.

I can only say that I hope they do but the reality is that it's unlikely. As you said yourself, eating dog meat is tradition among certain people and in certain places...you can't just eradicate a tradition because a few people think it's wrong. Having said that though, I do feel like an increasing number of Chinese are starting to develop greater empathy towards animals and that will hopefully mean that the demand for dog meat will go down. Here's to hoping anyway Puzzled

Sorry, but it is illegal to actually eat dog in China, if I recall. Same with South Korea. It is, however, legal to eat it in Canada.

Anyway, I don't like it, but I don't feel it is my place to say anything about it. Indians are horrified that we in the west eat cows. Muslims don't eat pig. We don't eat dog.

You can't ride around on a westerner high horse on this issue. As long as they aren't eating people we really can't say anything.

No, they'll likely never stop eating it. As alluded to earlier what makes a dog any different from a cow, pig or whatever meat you enjoy eating? I have eaten dog a few times, granted I'm still hindered by my preconceived notions that eating dog is "wrong", I have eaten worse tasting meats before.

I dont eat it because of the way it is percieved in my country, but I make no judgement on those who do as it is their custom to have it in their diet. As nevermind said it is hypocrtical of a person who eats beef or pork even though that is offensive to other religions cultures but tries to push their own belief onto others.

I would like to say first that I feel bad because I eat any meat. The fact that some living thing died so I can eat a steak bothers me, but I do like eating meat. This is my culture and how I was raised. I always thought the stories I heard about eating cats and dogs were false. I can see it if it is a matter of survial. I can't judge a culture that eats cats and dogs. However for me I think it is just so morally wrong. Cats and dogs were never domesticated, they choose and evolved to live with us. Animals have the emotions we do, have other senses and abilities that we can only imagine. They read body language and I'm sure that they can smell our emotional state. They can be so in tune with us and other creatures.I even think they understand humour. The cats always make practical jokes, my dogs too and she knows how to make me laugh. I sw an experiment where rats were raised by tickling and they seem to laugh. Cats and dogs live a paracitic relationship with us, they are friendly with us, try to please and we take care of them. I have and love a Collie dog and eight Maine Coon cats, buffet anyone? Just kidding, but ya can have some litter box cookies !

Who cares?

I live in a city where one of the local specialties is dog meat, and you can see signs for it on every block. Just by coincidence, it came up in class today, and all but one of the students present had eaten dog. Hell, I've seen a dog get butchered. Make me wanna puke, remembering my childhood dog.

After having seen this city, and the far south, I really doubt dog meat is going anywhere. I'm not comfortable with the idea, but like the above posters said: Hindus and cows, Jews/Muslims with pigs. The local native tribe where I grew up thought it was the most disgusting and barbaric thing in the world to eat fish. I'm not gonna cast the first stone, there.

I don't think they will ever stop. No they don't eat dog where I'm from in fact it's against the law. Eating a predatory animal VS eating prey is a no brainer for the idiots justifying eating cow's, sheep, etc... It's called the food chain dumbasses, we're the top, predators don't usually eat other predators there are many reasons and even a science behind it (you can get quite ill) but to compare dogs or cats to livestock is just dumb, no other word for it.

I suppose people have the "right" to eat whatever they choose, but I will never understand the concept of eating a dog.

Why on Earth would you ever eat an animal as useful as a dog? You can train them to GET FOOD. That's half the reason they have been domesticated for the past 8,000 years.

Of course, nowadays they're bred more for companionship. This is the part that kills me.

Look, most livestock (cows, pigs, sheep, chickens, etc.) were bred and manipulated over centuries to be big, stupid, meat producing machines. Call it early genetic manipulation. These animals probably wouldn't be able to survive in the wild any longer, as only the traits humans have wanted from them have been focused on. When was the last time you saw a wild cow?

Anyway, the same thing has been done with dogs. They were bred to BE COMPANIONS. Traits were selected that focused on intelligence, temperament, ability to perform tasks, etc. Not for MEAT. So, when you see a domestic dog, even if it's a mutt, comes from a lineage of human tampering to breed a companion animal. Your only chance to see a dog that was not bred as a companion animal is to find a wolf or a dingo from Australia. Sure there are "wild" or feral dogs, but most of them come from the same stock of domestic dogs bred to be companions for humans that have been feral for a while and/or mated with wolves/coyotes. There have NEVER been wild Beagles or Poodles. These animals just don't exist naturally.

So, when you're eating a dog, you're basically eating something originally bred for companionship. Even if it's from a "dog farm".

This, to me, just seems wrong.

I haven't eaten dog yet, but i'm open to trying it! Dog's are just animals like any other animal, and no more deserving of life than a cow or a horse (both of which are delicious).

Why does it bother people when others eat dog meat? I don't think its anyone's business what meat who prefers. So let me get this right, how killing a dog for meat is different from killing a goat, chicken, cow, monkey, rat.....(this list can go on and on). Stop being a hypocrite. If you eat any meat, you are in no position to judge anyone who prefers a different kind of meat than you do.

well for starters they are not meant to be food, but if a wet dog stinks, what does a cooked one smell like?
