Why pay for a vpn when it could be blocked tomorrow? I suspect we will see more websites agreeing to the censorship. There is a battle going on in the states at the moment over web neutrality. If the service providers win there will be no moral highground left.

How many Chinese can really buy a VPN, don't most of the VPNs that work need an international credit card for payment ?

Why paying for a VPN when you can get one as good for free?

I always hear about people using Astrill and other premium VPN, then complaining when these VPN get blocked by the government. Obviously they spam the internet with their ads "A VPN to bypass the Great Firewall" in order to sell more of it, thus they are the first targets of the authorities.

I use GoAgent, it's free and open source, full speed, no traffic limit, a non-invasive and minimized command line window, no ads, and above all it was never blocked in more than 5 years. The program is updated everyday anyway but you are not forced to download the latest version.

Why do people still pay for a VPN? I don't know.

RiriRiri:

A good VPN gives you more options than just enabling your browser: choosing your location, encrypting your traffic, etc. And a real good VPN properly serviced isn't blockable. They might sniff out the protocols regularly, but nothing permanent. Blocking protocols takes time, resources, and gets harder every time. Until they pull the plugs to the outside world physically anyway.

Now it obviously all depends on what you do/need to do with your Internet, but these days when even simple operations like updating a software through official repositories have become a pain in the ass... I simply don't feel like explaining China all over again every time I fail a ssh or just waiting for whatever bullshit software they have to unlock the timer and give me 5 minutes of download.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
