Q: Will you discuss Ferguson with your students?

If so, what are your students' opinions about it? Do you talk about racial tension in America?

So many of my students think that there are double standards.

I'd like to, hell I'd like to discuss it with anybody. But my students really only care about themselves, and their expensive shoes and Iphones.

We must have the same students.

how do i tell my students that 3 black men swore to a grand jury under oath that he was shot in the back, but the body had no bullets in the back, of course since all whites are racists bigots if we say anything, these 3 men will not be charged with perjury, the skin color gives them a pass, one brave witness collaborated the policeman's story, hope they never give his name or jesse jackson will put a reward on his head.

very sad story, the new generation is getting tired of racial politics and the old hucksters that stir this crap up in the press, after 50 years, it is getting pretty old and boring to play the same old song.

jesse shaking down texaco for 160 million, charlie rangel with the lie on twanda brawley and not paying taxes.

the sad thing is racial problems could be discussed and resolved but the cretans they have running the show keeps anyone from taking their grievances seriously.

you have to walk the walk before anyone will listen to you talk the talk.
i'm not sure anyone has even come close since martin luther king in leading on civlil rights and showing a good example for others to follow and nobody ever wants to discuss this little problem.

Well put. Michael Brown was a criminal and he should never be the face of police brutality. There are truly innocent victims of police brutality but the media ignores  them.

Well there certainly haven't been too many managers better than Sir Alex. He certainly splits opinion back home in the UK but I don't think he's ever been a racist.  His predecessor at Manchester United though, Big Ron Atkinson, that's a different matter...

royceH:

Left field.  Nice.

I discussed 'left field' in a class this afternoon and the student, a female naturally (by virtue of the fact she actually got it), appreciated it.

I am not American and thus can't pronounce myself on Fergusun events, but I sometimes openly discuss with Chinese about the racial issues in Europe when the topic comes up, I tell them what I think, that no race is more violent than others, that wealth disparities and discrimination are the reasons why there are tensions, but that your average white person is not responsible, politics and big firms looking for cheap labor through unqualified or poorly qualified immigration are the ones to blame.

ScotsAlan:

I find the whole European immigration debate interesting. I am a migrant too. But for some reason some people call me an expat. I often wonder what the difference between an expat and a migrant is.

Eorthisio:

I think that expatriates were traditionally sent abroad with the full expat package (income of course, free home provided by the company in host country, vehicle and private full time chauffeur often a local who knows the city very well, free air tickets home in business class for christmas and other events, ...) by their employer, they were high ranking people in key management positions, their stay in the host country was temporary (a few years at most) and they knew it from the beginning. This tend to disappear due to local people now having the needed skills in the rest of the world (and working for much cheaper) and economic difficulties encountered by Western countries

Now we can debate whether or not people coming in China on their own to work under a local contract for a local company are expats or immigrants, the fact that most of them see their stay as temporary make them expats, but a number come to work here because it's easier to find a job than in their home country, this would make them economic immigrants.

Nah, it's simpler than that, but well put, however.  An expat is someone who opts to live in another country for a time, but not permanently.  A  migrant is someone who goes to live in another country for good.

I remember something I heard from the movie Con Air: The Day of The Dog Will begin! If this keeps up there will be a rise up someday.

Lord_hanson:

I think the most important message from that film is "put the bunny down".

I'm not against discussing it but all the locals want to do is point out perceived US failings/shortcomings.

As for this event, I'm not as up to date as I could be.  Did the copper act illegally, inappropriately, or what?   Why is there conjecture?  Aren't facts facts?

i found introducing serious topics difficult when i was teaching. the debates never got more complex than is homework a good thing. anything serious they would switch off  and not engage at all. It was also difficult with adults because they are generally apolitical and have little interest in international events. i think they  were always frightened i would start preaching western values. it was too much effort and i stayed away from anything controversial.

my own view mirrors the far more eloquent poster above. The black guy was a thug who violently robbed a store then attacked a police officer. if he had managed to knock the policeman unconscious he probably then would have killed him. though rodney king was a criminal, his human right were abused when police  savagely attacked him as he offered no resistance. this was no rodney king incident.

There is racism in every country - as well as denial. I think Ferguson is a valid topic at the high school and university level.  I'd be willing to bet many Chinese won't believe it until they see it for themselves on the internet.  So many think America is some magical land of perfection where the law and courts make no mistakes and justice reigns Supreme.

A little off subject here, but could you imagine if cops in America had to be wired while on duty (recording everything they said to suspects).  Maybe this would have eliminated the riots in Ferguson or on the flip side, got the cop indicted. When there are only two primary witnesses and one cannot be deposed (because he is dead), creates havoc in racially-charged cases.

Shining_brow:

Or, maybe the recording would have vindicated him...

It would appear you have already decided on the 'truth' of the matter!

A friend of mine, a black guy from Florida, posted that he was disappointed in the US legal system, finding the defendant police-officer not guilty.

I pointed out to him that his disappointment is ill-directed. The problem wasn't the legal system (although, no doubt, there are issues there as well), but the social system. The trial was conducted according to the same legal principles and processes that are entitled to all people over in the US (except illegal immigrants). The jury didn't find enough valid evidence to convict. This is NOT a problem with the SOCIAL unrest - and the 2 issues must be kept seperate.

The same in my home country (and in many other countries around the world - although, China is not one of those countries). We have social issues. We have minorities who think that the law disenfranchises them. It doesn't. It's just that the social issues often tend to lead into legal issues... and therefore becomes a higher disparity in inmate populations and conviction records.

And, lastly, and specifically relating to Ferguson county - the 'Grand Jury' would be insane to not indict this guy if they had reason to... the publicity etc would be HUGE!!!!!

No, since the two main responses will be (a) a blank stare of incomprehension/indifference or (b) yet more anti-West/anti-White rhetoric from the class ultra-nationalists.

It's funny how the Chinese usually support Blacks in Africa and the West when there are racial tensions, but when said Blacks come to live in China they avoid them like the plague. "LOL", as the young people say.

An ex-gf said she was sad when Mandela died. When I pointed out the violence used by the ANC to promote their aims, she said it was good for blacks to kill whites because whites oppressed the blacks. Then she went to study in Wuhan and said she felt afraid of living there because there were so many Africans...

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
