Maggie, I know you have an Australian husband. Do you live in Australia? If you do, then a wide range of prenatal tests and checks will be done by your GP from the second you know you're pregnant - up to and including sex testing (you have the choice to know or not) and tests for a wide range of problems and disabilities will be done a few months into the pregnancy.

Or do you mean genetic testing for you and hubby before you even start trying for the baby?

maggiegirly:

Hey Miss A,we live in China and we will probably make babies here as well or move to OZ next year, not sure yet.I prefer to live in China hehehe

Just wanted to do a test In order to make healthy babies. In China,we call them 婚检(Marriage tests).

I think Maggie is just talking about blood compatibility tests and tests for potential genetic problems. My wife and I had those done before we had kids. I think it is worth doing even if you are doing it the "natural" way.

Yes, get them done. Also, if I were you I would have your baby in Oz, think about if there is a seriosu problem with the baby, in Oz it will be covered by government medical and get top care. In China you don't get that.

Let's say the baby has to be in an incubator for three months, you want that in China and to pay out of pocket?

maggiegirly:

Yeah, you are right,it's better to have baby in OZ,my mother in law wants us to have baby in OZ as well.husband is all up to me,But myself,I prefer to live in China.maybe I will be more ready to leave China next year, who knows

Maggie

As you know we had our kids in Aus

Miss A and the others are right about the care in Aus is second to non

We are lucky that our kids are healthy and there were no problems

and don't freak out about Mongolian Butt

most Chinese/European children get it

the biggest problem you will have is getting the Grandparents to give them back

good luck

MissA:

Phil, I will almost certainly regret answering this, but WTF is Mongolian Butt?

philbravery:

settle down it is not that bad

When Eurasian kids are born it is likely that they  have what looks like a very badly bruised bum

The Doctor told me it is common in mixed race children

both of ours had it till they were about 6 months old

is this question about having tests done before getting pregnant or testing in the first months of pregnancy? The answers given so far seems to be a bit of both.

In any case, I think you should ask yourself what you want to do with the answers from these tests. In case you and your husband, according to a test will have a risk of having children with some kind of problem, what will that do to your relationship. Say the test came back and said there was 10% chance of a problem.

Any tests done prior to conceiving will tell you there is a certain percentage of you having a baby with some sort of diagnosable problem. Any tests done while pregnant will tell more accurately if anything is wrong.
