What are your career goals?

purely money or working towards a particular position?

will this position further your career in the direction you want?

you have to make this choice yourself.

good friend of mine, worked in China for a few years an on return home was offered a job she was not really interested in, in a finance company, but fantastic salary.

She has worked hard (as she always does) and grown to enjoy it and has been promoted and developed her career within the company with a great team, and is looking towards heading a project she is very interested in.

I'll be joining this place soon too because it is not only interesting and challenging, but well paid.

your job is what you make it.

if you go and do the bare minimum, complain all the time, focus solely on the money and don't look for ways to improve things around you, of course you are going to be miserable and dissatisfied.

In addition your colleagues will probably find you unpleasant to work with.

do you want to be the sour lemon at work?

if money is all you are after, why not become a prostitute?

That way you can potentially earn very good money and there is no need to think of career development at all as you will have achieved them at the first go.

I would love to be a prostitute but I am 59 and a heterosexual male. When I was 20 and in UBC I was a gigalo for a few months, but the women where in there late 30's. I was lucky I didn't catch anything. As for taking a job just because you like the pay: Go for it only if it is a short term job (like a few months). As a career: Never. 2 good reasons. 1)your productivity will drop quickly resulting in a negative outcome. 2) Your personality will suffer because people will see you as a complainer and money hungry rather than goal oriented on the job.

you never know, you might make your fortune in China yet.

but it is true, if there is a team member, especially someone in a position of authority or seniority, who is not committed to the team, being only interested in the money, it can poison the group and make for a toxic work environment for all.

if you are a paid a salary, why not give it your best or make the best out of it you can?

as my friend found out, what was initially a job taken for salary turned into a job that she enjoyed and is very good at.

net result? she is in a happy work environment.

but then she works with professionals who behave like adults, not like entitled children.

@donnie3857, I agree that you can only take s job you don't like but paid well for temporary. Otherwise the time will be wasted in the career path.

@Blondie, I believe your friend is a special case.

@Viki

not at all.

i have seen many people enjoy their work even when they began as only being interested in the money.

With any of the jobs i have had here in China there is always an element i dislike, but I never let it affect my performance or treatment of my colleagues as i always with do my best - i am after all being paid for my best, not for being a resentful child who is 'too good' for the position.

It is the sign of a professional that personal dislikes about a job do not affect your performance.

People quickly detect if you are only using half your ass in a job because it is not your 'ideal' and this can affect how your colleagues treat you.

If you want to be the sour grape in the team, by all means do so, but you will find that complaints about you and performance will probably result in some sort of censuring or discipline, or even not making it past your probationary period.

a negative resentful attitude to the job, especially in a manager, will not go  unnoticed. especially by team subordinates.

It's difficult if not impossible to find a responsible team manager in China, almost all are in for the money and collect lots of hongbaos and often got their position through guanxi and not because they have good managerial skills.
