Q: Working in a small city in China

Is it more difficult to find part-time work in a smaller city in China? On one hand, there are less foreigners to compete with for students, but on the other hand, there aren't as many students to choose from and parents have less money to blow.

You answered your own question and I got two points for it.

Apparently, it is not dangerous when one's talking to him/herself. However, when you start answering your own Q, it's right time for loooong jogging up to the hill.

Depends on which smaller city.

People don't realize it but people in lower-tier cities make pretty good money, possibly better than larger cities (lower costs). You could charge the same or even more then a larger city for part-time work simply because the supply is low and the demand is high.

I wouldn't say easier but you do get more power over the situation in smaller cities.

expatlife26:

I briefly lived in a smallish city in Anhui when I first moved here.

The pros are that if you like that sort of thing you get a certain degree of 'rock star treatment' from people who aren't used to seeing non-chinese around. Restaurant/business owners will be really nice to you.

The cons are that the people who freak out about you (good or bad) are all going to be total fucking morons and that powerful people in poor places are the scum of the earth.

The head of the finance dept at the university I was teaching at wouldn't give me the time of day, nor assign me the finance classes I was told I was hired to teach; instead just gave me book-less ESL classes to finance majors, but he absolutely lost his shit when I quit right after the start of the spring term to take a finance job in Shanghai. Threatened to have me arrested/deported etc.

was correctly assured by the company hiring me that this guy that this guy was just being a trashy bumpkin about things. He was just upset that he was losing his foreigner to something much better; he wanted to feel like he was someone who could affect the outcome of my life. Unforunately that's the kind of bullshit you can expect from an uneducated retard who asskissed his way into a party spot in a poor city.

I would whip that guy with my belt if I could get away with it.

Hahaha...

I know that trashy "I am the lord of these lands" bumpkins as well. Same thing kind of happened to me when during the end of my first year teaching ESL.

I had a super high feedback rating from the students, not so much because of my teaching abilities as I as a single white male that put on a break dancing show for one event. It was more of a popularity contest, but the foreign affairs bumpkin ate it up and wanted to keep me for another year. I said no, because I hated him but told him it was because of the pollution so he wouldn't go ape shit. He did anyway, so I told him he was an idiot and if he didn't give me my final pay etc. then I wouldn't hand over the grades.

He gave in but still hates me... shattered his illusions that he owned me and I was his property... same situation as you had. Can't keep a good man down! Maybe if he wasn't such a dick I would have stayed there for a few more years.

It is hilarious how these people think that because you are within their little world that they own you. Now, I make enough and have enough connections to destroy the man's entire life and simply leave the country like nothing happened. People should watch how they treat people, you never know when the tables can turn.

Right, I fucking hate those mean-spirited pieces of shit. It's completely indefinsible behavior.

i mean if I walked into my bosses office right now and told him I had a really good offer from another firm, he's not going to be HAPPY about it but at the same time I would imagine he can respect that I'm making the same choice he would. If he's a little short with me, I can forgive him because I just created a problem for him, but ultimately I doubt he'll be cursing my name.

But these people are different. He didn't give a shit about having a foreigner in his department, never said two words to me. He was upset I didn't know my place. That people like him were allowed to look out for their own best interest, but not people like me.

Honestly I haven't met anybody like that in big cities here. In my experience that specific brand of shittyness is mostly a small-town thing.

Its usually harder to find initial contacts for part time work in smaller towns but once you have them then yeah the lower amount of foreigners is a bonus. Prices and ect can be good. But generally speaking your not going to get as much per hour as in top tier cities. Possible of course.

I was in a small disctrict of shunde, in foshan and foreigners where quite rare so eventually became valuable. Got introduced to smaller comapnies and was getting 350 to 4 an hour for one on ones.. But it took a while.

royceH:

See, that's my main problem really.  I've had a couple of failed small businesses before and I pretty much know the reason why.  I don't place enough value on the dollar to subscribe to the make money at the cost of what's reasonable theory.

I've had opportunities to charge more than 200/250 per hour but I simply don't want any more than that.  Doesn't seem right.

Just last week I managed to talk a new student down from 250 to 200.  She said she wanted to pay 250 so finally I agreed but only if I could stretch the class to 75 minutes.

Business is for the business minded.

Enough is enough.  Mind you, I haven't got much.

Make love, not war.

Peaceout!

If you are any good, word will spread quickly in smaller communities so more opportunities will present themselves to you rather than having to go out and find them.

There is one caveat that needs to be attached to that. You should always bear in mind that part time work is not legal and it is harder to hide the fact that you are doing this kind of activity in a small town. You can expect word to get back to employer much more easily so make sure you either cover your back well or they agree. That goes also for the PSB and immigration.

Well, actually I'm working in a small city (in Hunan), they told me it's a new city (about 50 years), just one million people, but with all the facilities (bus, taxi, everything is so near any place).

Of course the foreigners are also a few, and I'm not a fan of night life (clubs, bars), so this place is great for me.

I can give you one recommendation, come this kind of places with previous knowledgement of  basic chinese language, here is even harder to find chinese friends who can speak english.

People's life here is pretty quiet, finding students won't be difficult, you can make extra money (I'm doing it on weekends).

I left Guangzhou to come here, I don't regret this decision. Hope you can enjoy as much as I do.

I'm in a small city and I have enough private classes to fill in my time.  Actually I still have lots of spare time but don't seek any more work.

Knock it back, in fact.

My real love is time wasting and I indulge in plenty of it.

But small city, fewer foreigners.  They'll soon know you're in town and make approaches to you.

Way to go, I say.

There are many small cities in Xinjiang who would like to contract a native English speaker.  The problem they have is in finding people prepared to travel to such a remote place.  I know of several schools looking for teachers, and not just native speakers either.

And this afternoon I bumped onto the boss of the Canadian school here and he said they're looking for a Canadian teacher (real)  for next semester.  And they pay equivalent Canadian salary.

Origin:

Are you in Xinjiang now? i would be interested in learning more about these schools looking for teachers. thanks royceH

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
