Q: Would like to know the current visa status/process regarding visa z applications in HK?

Does anyone know more specifically the recent laws regarding the z visa process in Yunnan province?. It was initially my intention to come on an L visa, spend some time there to acclimatise and enjoy a  bit of a break before looking for an English teaching job. My understanding is that the laws differ from place to place. I would have liked to been able to get my feet on the ground, have some face to face interviews before making an informed decision on an appropriate school. I should add that I'm an Australian citizen, (if that makes any difference) and that I am prepared to go to HK and return pending a job offer. I would appreciate any advice. Cheers.

If you were to find a job that you like, then you would need your employer to cause the Letter of Invitation that will issue in support of your Z visa to state "Hong Kong" as place of application.  If you are in Yunnan, I can't say for a 100% fact that you will need to exit the country to change from one visa to the other, as this is China, and miracles do happen, but the chances are rather great that this will be the case.  If the Letter of Invitation does not say "Hong Kong" as place of delivery but rather Australia, you will have a trip home in the end.  The final and ultimate decision, including whether or not to issue you a Z visa in Hong Kong even with a Hong Kong invitation letter, will rest with the Examining Officer at the China Visa Office.

As for even considering working on a L visa, and I am not saying that you are, I would strongly advise against it.

Thanks for taking the time to respond, it's much appreciated. It seems to be everything is at the discretion of the psb and whether the gods are smiling in your favour. Thanks for the tip, but I wouldn't ever consider working on an L visa. I've read the horror stories of deportation and blacklisting. I guess my safest bet is to secure an invitiation prior to coming to China.

David, kind soul, that is the best bet. If the school is authorized to hire foreigners, then obtaining a Letter of Invitation for you is not a complicated process at all. They need to go through several bureaucratic hoops on their end. That being said, this is still China and if you are going to work outside of Kunming, let's say, and if your school were to have a really good relationship with the local PSB, then all things are possible but that is so, so risky at best and fraught with potential problems for you. Yunnan is a great, great place to be and so much of it, believe it or not, is still relatively unspoiled. Kunming is a medium-tier city, kind of removed from the rest of the world, but it is laid back and enjoyable and the weather is mild. In other words, get the Z visa before you leave if possible.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
