Q: Would you buy a Chinese brand car and drive your family in it?

If yes - which one and why?

I bought a Lifan 320 (bit of a Mini Copy!) more than 2 years back. 45k RMB on the road. Great little car for driving to work & back every day & done some long trips in it as well. Yes it's had a few small quality problems but nothing that British cars from the 1970's didn't have! Majority of them fixed for free under the 2 year guarantee. For the price it was good value.

Would I buy another one? Yes based on my experience with this one.

Yeah cars made for 1st world markets are now just insanely good.

I remember even as a kid you'd read about the problems a new car had...cylinder heads bored out incorrectly, cars shipping with faulty alternators etc.

Now it's like "the Corolla's cupholders just aren't quite as well positioned as the Fusion's and we are NOT fans of the blue climate control buttons" haha just silly shit like that. For <$7000 USD for a functionally sized 4-door car what do you expect?

Although I agree that Chinese cars are getting better they still sport a very big problem. Looks over function. All the copies of Toyota Corolla's out there, they may look the part. Byt when BYD made the F3 (an almost identical car to Toyota's) they made a small sedan that looks like a Corolla. They didn't copy the choice of material, the safety systems underneath. If you have a frame that is designed to handle impact in a specific way, then changing to another material, or even a slightly different quality of the same material means you don't have the same structural qualities anymore, and it means you will die in your piece of shit car if some other piece of shit hits you.

If I had the choice between crashing in a Chinese SUV or a VW Polo, I'd pick the Polo.

They are still not engineering cars, they are still copying. How can I tell. Well, I can see on the big motor shows, you will have employees from Chinese car manufacturers, taking pictures of strange parts of the cars, e.g. suspension, door-hinges etc. Things that a motor journalist usually doesn't take pictures of (but may write about as door hinges are violently interesting, recent new cars with suicide doors springs to mind)
