Q: Your 10 Favourite Countries - RANKED????

1) Canada - I'm totally bias on this one. You can call me on that.

2) USA - Best sitcoms/social networking websites, bar none. World financial leader and still vibrant even in hard times.  I also admire their humility and their ability to laugh at themselves and their problems. Other countries could learn a thing or two from the states.

3) Botswana - Beautiful Scenery, Economic Miracle, Stable Enlightened Government in spite of crazy neighbours. Possibly the world's most friendly people. Definitely world's most beautiful language.

4) Portugal - Have you ever been to Portugal? It's awesome. But if I had to choose just one thing it would angel-voiced Mafalda Veiga.

5) Japan - Culturally innovative. A true original. Greatly enlightened.

6) South Korea - Another great cultural innovator. Asia's greatest military power in ancient times. Vibrant film industry demonstrates cultural superiority.

7) Vietnam - The only country to single-handedly repel Mongolian invasion without outside assistance. Also defeated America. Very powerful.

8) Philippines: Most beautiful islands in the world.

9) India: Bollywood

10) Iceland: Cool Vikings, Penis Museum.

Breaking my comment drought on this one;

Actually, number one, two and three are pretty much a dead heat.

1. Italy - Rome is utterly magnificent. The cuisine is even better than I could possibly have imagined.

2. Laos - All the good bits of SE Asia, none of the hassle.

3. Scotland - beautiful, beautiful countryside; great, great pubs; whisky, whisky, whisky.

4. Australia - Biased. Whatever.

5. Vietnam - I love this country, it's vibrant, hectic, funky, beautiful and infuriating. It's not for everyone, but it is definitely for me.

6. Fiji - Just like the postcards. Million dollar smiles everywhere you look.

7. India -  Top of my wish list. I know the country has issues, but Indian people always have something to say worth hearing. And how do they manage to fit so many people traditions, cultures, languages and religions in one smallish place!?

8. Argentina - a very close number two on the wish list. Scenery, culture, wine, beautiful people, bring it on!

9. New Zealand - sure, those hobbits speak funny, but the South Island has some really unbelievably gorgeous scenery and great wine.

10. Thailand - not just for sleazy sexpats, Thailand is welcoming and lovely. And the food!

1). USA. Like your pick of Canada, I'm a little biased in this choice, since I'm from there.

2). New Zealand. One of the highest economic freedom indexes, plus, beautiful topography!

3). Scotland. Breath-taking landscapes. Once I got out of the cities, the people were as friendly as could be, particularly on the Isle of Mull.

4). Nepal. Chaotic and exotic, the people are a beautiful mix of the Indian and Asian cultures.

5). Canada. British Columbia and Vancouver island.

6). Kenya. Mombasa. Wonderful people and such a diverse mix of food!

7). China. It's weird, it's wonderful, it's China.

8). Australia. Would love to visit, one day.

9). Japan. Innovative and hugely creative, Japan has been a favorite of mine for years.

10). Finland. "The mountains so lofty, the trees are so tall."

Wowsa, this won't be easy, i've been priveleged enough to travel to many, many countries.

1. Switzerland - everything works as it should, excellent social system (if you're native) stunning scenery and lovely people.

2. Cyprus - beautiful nation, beautiful people very nice  climate, I was going to retire there, then I got married. (just don't expect things to happen in a hurry).

3. Canada - Lovely and hugely varied scenery, all the amenities of the USA but none of the baggage of being the 'world superpower'.

4. China - OK I'm biased due to marriage, but stunning history, exotic, incredible food, hugely varied scenery and the most beautiful women (ok extreme bias on that one).

5. Spain  - get off the tourist track and avoid the 'British' enclaves, for some stunning history, beautiful scenery, wonderful culture, and a true taste of what Persia had to offer.

6. Botswana - beautiful friendly people, stunning scenery, modern and primitive roled into one without too much of a clash.

7. Scotland - (I'm biased as  my family are from there), avoid Glasgow and you have the most wonderful people in the most wonderful scenery with a great history and the absolute best party people I"ve ever met.

8. Germany - wonderulf beer, wonderful work eithic, some beautiful scenery a great history (ok two blots on that but.....) efficient and heck you can even have fun, you just got to tell them in advance.

9. Italy - I would put Italy in this list just for the ice cream! If you like food Italy is an absolute must! Oh and it's got a bit of history too.

10. Falkland Islands - wonderful people, beautiful scenery, interesting climate, astounding wildlife, and not too modern but not too primitive.

OK having read that list it is Europe biased but then I've only listed nations I've spent some time in and while I've traveled a lot, I haven't had the opportunity to settle in that many places.

I would dearly like to add some of the Arab nations as their history is incredible but unfortunately I cannot list a place where a significant number of it's inhabitants are trying to kill me due to modern politics!

Don't think I can make a list in order of entire countries, so i'm going to go by places:

1. Cornwall and the south-east of England for its beauty, its history and the mystery that surrounds the place, mostly because it's crop circle central and i'm a big fan of alien art.

2. Kerala in India; I got lost in the backwoods there on a low-rider and got the impression of people living very close to nature, looking healthy and happy, and I just remember thinking, 'It would be a shame for this place to change one bit.'

3. Chamonix in France for its snowboarding, for the shadow of Mont Blanc and the view trekking down the glacier.

4. The Greek islands could be a place to retire to. Laid-back easy pace, clear blue sea and warm sun. Nearly jumped off the boat home and swam back.

5. Jiuzhaigou in Sichuan actually made me think, 'This must be what Heaven looks like.'

6. Sydney is the city i'd most like to live in; it's surrounded by gorgeous countryside where you can go whale watching and all the wildlife is unafraid of man. It has a cool beach, a marvelous harbour, it's clean, diverse and a massive laugh.

That's it, gonna leave it at six, those are the ones that jumped out. My top ten's not finished yet.

kchur:

Holy cow, I'm jealous you went to Kerala. I had to read a bunch about colonial Kerala in uni and I've always wanted to go there.

It's beautiful, just don't go roaming in the forest in flip-flops. I made that mistake and ended up jumping around like a fool slapping ants the size of baked beans off my feet. Those bastards bite!

Hugh.G.Rection:

I was going to put Belize in my list too, awesome country, but I lived there in 1983 and it was 'dangerous' then. Apparently that has got a lot worse since.

I never had the good fortune to live in Belize. Just diving trips and overland once from Flores, Guatemala to Belize City.

1) Antarctica. clean crisp snow, lots of aliens to dig up, the penguins can dance.

2) Arctic. while not a country, see it before it's gone, can go ride icebergs, maybe sink a ship.

3) Alaska. clean crisp snow, not a country but it is alone, you will be also if you visit, reports of alien abductions.

4) Afghanistan's national game is called Buzkashi, or in other words, goat-grabbing. It's a sport where the players in two teams try to catch a goat while riding on a horse. Any country that plays with goats has to be a fun place.

5) Algeria, 80%-90% of Algeria is Sahara desert. And they have the biggest sand dunes which may look like snow. highest temperature recorded 60.5* Celsius

6) Angola. also known as Angolish Empire of Flying Snakes

7) Argentina. Argentine women go through the maximum number of plastic surgeries in the world, per person. Argentina is one of the leading producers of wines ever since the 16th century and has approximately 1800 wineries currently. The women are beautiful and the wine is good or maybe the wine is too good and the women well.....

8) Azerbaijan.don't you just love the sound of this country? The first known fireplace and construction in human history, which is dated back from 700,000 to 500,000 years ago, was discovered in Azikh Cave (This is before China). The Burning Mountain is a rare natural wonder in the Absheron peninsula. It burns all year round due to natural gas escaping from the ground.

9) Armenia is known the world-over for its apricots, considered to taste better than anywhere else in the world. Too bad I hate them.

10) Australia.  Apparently the first European settlers in Australia drank more alcohol per person than any other community in the history of mankind. In 1954 Bob Hawke made it into the Guinness Record Book: he sculled 2.5 pints of beer in 11 seconds. Bob Hawke went on to become the Prime Minister of Australia. No part of Australia is more than 1000 km from the ocean and a beach. (The point in the world that's the furthest from any ocean would be in China.)
