Q: Your favorite Chinese movies or music - any recommendation?

I rarely go to the cinema in beijing cuz I think most of chinese commercial movies are kind of boring and a bit exaggerated. But I like to go to the little shops on the street to buy some dvds, you can find some banned chinese films there with cheap price. As for music, no Jay Chou please! I can't stand with these chinese pop singers and their songs. I do like some local indie bands tho, went to several gigs in Gulou area and was really enjoyed their songs.

Your recommendation?

Chinese music generally sucks. There are only 3 rough genres: shitty pop/soppy love songs, shitty RnB which is not really RnB, and shitty rock which is pretty much just shitty pop.

You could try some ethnic music like Hanggai who are Mongolian.

Film wise, Chen Kaige and Zhang Yimou used to make good films until they sold out and started making commercial turd. Wong Kawai is from Hong Kong but he makes some good films too. I like his Chungking Expresss.   Shower is a decent film (forgot who by) looking at the modernization of Beijing (as a microcosm representative of the whole of China) and well worth checking out.

A movie which has made an lasting impression on is "Suzho River" 苏州河. This movie was banned in China and the director was banned for 2 years from making movies. The story isn't really anything controversial, a fairly simple love story set to the dirty, industrial areas of Shanghai. But how the story was told visually really made an impression on me. I'm usually not into art-house type movies, which this one is, but I really enjoyed it.

I like Chinese traditioinal music and some contemporary like12 Girls Band but I never got much into recording any. I've not seen any movies I like. The Chinese need to copy some of Chevy Chases movies or 3 Stooges. I think they would come off great as Chinese. I finallly watched Jackie Chans 1911, didn't think it was any good. Thanks for the movie info, I watched some. Interesting look into life in China.

The music sucks, aside from some traditional minority stuff.  As for film, Wong Kar Wai is a good place to start.
