Q: Anyone know why snow peas are called "Holland bean" in China??
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_pea
Are they called a different name in Europe? Is holland a big producer?? Its a stupid question i know but google isnt helping and its a wierd Chinese name 荷兰豆.
Never heard either term about them. They are just "peas" here and at home
Peas out !
Because they are flat and "clog" up your digestive tract.
I've heard my mom call them that name. She is about as American WASPy as u can get.... so I guess that name is in use sometimes. I prefer the way snow peas sounds though. :)
They are called 荷兰豆 (Holland Peas) in China because it is believed that is where they were first cultivated. 豆 can mean both bean and pea. They were imported to China by the British, via Hong Kong. They were originally called Dutch peas in English.
