Q: Are Carrefour and Megamart in China like their counterparts in other parts of the world?
Do they, for example, stock up on oats, toiletries, and general foodstuffs as in other parts of the world? I read that people say they can't get proper coffee, etc. Can you get this at these 2 big brand stores?
No, typically they all have the same two brands of instant coffee. There is typically an imported food section, and in one of the Carrefours I frequent, they have real coffee (as in ground beans for putting in a filter and running hot water through) in the other they don't.
I think supermarkets are very similar in what products they have. There is in my mind little difference between Walmart, Carrefour etc and the Chinese counterparts like Vanguard. Don't expect the supermarkets to be like home, they have adapted to the Chinese market.
The supermarkets typically have everything from toothbrushes to tv's and a decent selection in most product categories. The international brands are often missing and picking a local brand can be disappointing.
For coffee, either get used to instant coffee or e.g. buy online on taobao or go to Starbucks and buy coffee beans there
YES. They have their counter parts in their home countries. So, for example Carrefour is a French company, based in Paris and a multi national retailer. In other cities one can find a store "Metro" which is a Chinese division of the German supermarket chain "Aldi". Megamart was an Australian company and owned by The Coles Group.
