Q: Are conversations via skype recorded/listened to in China?

Shed my usual phone-being-bugged suspicion the other day and naivelhy said a few sensitive things on skype. Only afterwards did I start to wonder if skyping is listened in to just as much as international calls.

Skype is encrypted and based  in Europe.  It's about the safest way to communicate here.

QQ on the other hand is the opposite and everything is monitored.

This is why you can't access your Skype account here unless you have a VPN or use a third party website....they don't like it.

My skype works without the VPN on.

I mean accessing your account. When I first came here I tried to load my skype account with my credit card but I was always blocked. Skype itself works fine.

If you use a VPN then your skype conversations are safe. you can access skype without a VPN but it's unsecure. In reality, if they want to listen in they will, a VPN is not going to stop anything.

Of course they are - especially if you are a person under suspicion. Skype will eventually be banned in China. Like the popular social networking websites based outside China, the CCP has no control over the content thus people are able to freely express and discuss what they wish.

Skype is a huge threat to the stability of the wonderful CCP. Don't fark with them though, look what is happening to Bo and his wife.
