Q: Are there any scenic places around Shanghai that won't be mobbed with tourists over the Oct hol?
Want to go a day trip somewhere over the October break but don't want to go anywhere with too many people. Zhujiajiao is basically out of the question even though it's a pretty water town and I'd really like to go there; just not this October. Anywayyyyy....if any of you have any recommendations for pretty places within easy reach of Shanghai that won't crazy and overpopulated, let me now.

I'd say NO.
The National day holiday is the vacation holiday for Chinese whereas Spring Festival is visiting family holiday.
You're best bet would be to travel outside of China during this holiday to somewhere like Vietnam or Thailand. Take some time off during another part of the year to travel in China.
If you do risk going now it's less of it being overcrowded and more about it being able to get there or not, last year some roads had traffic jams that lasted well over 6hrs without traffic even moving!
Just one day? That's a little difficult.Maybe you can try 古猗园 or 枫泾古镇

Why ? I can see same pictures everyday, just few steps out of the apartment complex, hidden from eyes by trees and highrises ... everywhere. nothing special. unless there is baijiu for free
No. The spare-time starved Chinese people exploit anything that looks like an opportunity to get out of the factory.
Same for me, I need this info too
Some people say, people go out of Shnaghai, but many from other places will come to see, so problem not solved Always crowded here
Otherwise, I will spend the time watching movies and playing with son and eating and eating eating eating and drinking and playing with my wife, of course
