Q: Build a 220 storey building in 90 days in Changsha?

Just read this on http://news.sky.com/story/1014603/china-to-build-tallest-skyscraper-in-90-days

"A company in China is preparing to build the world's tallest skyscraper in just 90 days.

From the foundations upwards, the whole construction will be erected within three months at a rate of five floors a day.

Work will start at the end of this month and it should all be finished by the end of February.......................

The building will be called Sky City and its statistics are quite remarkable. It will be 838 metres high, with 220 floors and a construction area of one million square metres.

To achieve that, 200,000 tons of steel will be used.

There will be space for 31,000 people inside, who will be able to move up and down with the help of 104 high speed lifts.

Some 83% of the building will be for residential use, with room for 17,400 people."

Your thoughts?

In a way perhaps this project turned out better than anyone could have hoped for.

This was a really interesting article.  Thank you very much.  Will it really, really be able to hold up under the stress of a 9 degree earthquake on the Richter scale, as they write?  For me, given the rapidity of the construction, etc., I can only wonder about the degree of quality control involved.  Interesting to see, for sure, but I would not live there.  And why Changsha of all places?

Isn't a nine on that scale continent shattering?

I suspect they mean the outside shell will be complete in 90 days, then another indeterminate period for the insides to be completed.

As to the earthquake proofing, I saw an article that said, basically they fit a bloody huge pendulum in the building and this dampens the effects of an earthquake. That said if a category 9 hits, I doubt the building will be habitable afterwards, although so long as it's still upright I suppose that would be considered a success.

One of the few bonuses of the system of government in China is if they choose a hugely high status project like this, someone somewhere has almost certainly looked into the realistic possibilities and the quality will be virtually guaranteed as the loss of face if this turns out to be low quality and late would be too huge for the CCP to take.  (Of course no-one has said anything that I noticed on the cost and who is paying).

Im sure a project like that is well researched and tested to make sure it feasible and safe.

That being said, If someone gave me a free apartment in it, i wouldnt even think about moving in. and i would look for and apartment 839 meters away.

a project like this could also be the construction company getting some cheap publicity, e.g. that could help them get funding for building another ghost city somewhere.

according to the wiki the construction time has been extended to 210 days, and the start of construction delayed until January.

A thing that I did not find is, where in Changsha will this building be. They must have land allocated for it, if it was to actually be a proper project.

giadrosich:

It isn't actually going to be in Changsha proper, but will be built in Lin Xiang. The city is located along G4, about an hours drive northeast from Changsha City, about halfway to Wuhan.

This, according to some planners I know who work for the Hunan provincial government. Lin Xiang is not far from Dongting Lake, so the view from the skyscraper should be quite scenic on a clear day.

Pogger, kind soul, you are in Changsha.  You talked about this project, I think ... did it ever come to fruition?  Or was it just more mass-media hype?

I think they will cheat and use 5000 lbs of steel and the concrete will not set in 90 days, maybe they will use plaster of paris. It sets quickly. It will make world news when it falls down. ...Today in China, the tallest building in the world collapsed. It fell after only being completely yesterday.

Apparently it is prefabricated. They put it together like Lego blocks. Even though I like going to the top of the world's tallest buildings, I think I will pass on this one.

I want the commissions for leasing all that office space space. Wait, it's pre-leased, right? Or is it? I'm going to see if I can find out.

LMAO if it's not at least 50% pre-leased.

A:It happened to me, once ... in 2014 or 15 ...Plane from RP city (Tianjin) had more than 10h delay and I came to the HK's exit Luohu some 7 hours after the RP expiration date.In real, I came to the exit crossing just on time or only an hour late, but Luohu is closed overnight (10pm - 6am), which I didn't know. There were two unexpected things happened at that exit: flight's delay with closed Luohu overnight on the topI had a decent and real excuse for the cops next morning, but still I was put in a side office for some 3 or 4h and then cops had a short lecture with '.. and make sure, it will never happened again! ..', and I was let go without anything on my record. At least, at the new Z visa application and following reentry to China nobody ever mentioned anything about the delayed exit. However, I had a bad, un-eased feeling at the following Z visa appearance in Wanchai ...It is much, much wiser and safer to exit at least a day or even a few days ahead of the RP expiration date. -- icnif77
