So did anybody believe that the US government would let a Chinese government company finance and build a high speed rail between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
I know California is a combination of Mexico, Vermont, and Quebec on steroids politically but nationalism backlash is sweeping the nation.
California will be a big problem in the future because of bankrupt local and state government pension plans and having 20 percent of the congress vote total by population makes ignoring the problem a war zone to come for budget fights but bailing them out means bailing out all the other liberal bankrupt pension states, Connecticut, Illinois, New York, etc.
Going into debt for high speed rail in the middle of these problems and no middle class to ride the thing seemed like a pipe dream to begin with.
I'm frankly surprised anybody thought this had a snowball chance in hell of ever seeing sunlight.
The people who think money grows on trees truly amaze me, crank up the printer and cut some more trees boys we got spending to do. Who is paying for it? who cares?

Governments around the world are doing the same things
we just awarded defense contracts that we can do to overseas companies that are based in tax havens .
they just fill their pockets and shake us tax payers for more cash .
the object is to win government like it is a game.
State funded infrastructure building can be a good thing. If the tenders go to local companies and the jobs go to local workers and the materials are sourced locally. China's growth for the last 5 years is based on state funded infrastructure. It's a pity that the growth that China has experienced is just a huge confidence trick. Empty apartment blocks and roads going to nowhere aren't really growth at all. They could have built schools and hospitals instead. The high speed trains are good though.
You have not seen anything yet. Just wait once Trump is president, LOL... not really!!!
