Has anyone tried one of those 100 RMB air filter fans from Taobao?
Do they work?
They are likely better than no filter. What goes on inside one of the expensive air filters is pretty much what a fan + filter can achieve.
NiceBrice:
OK great, it's got to be better than nothing, right?
I keep getting really sick and I'm sure it's the pollution.
Cheers mate!
Scandinavian:
www.myhealthbeijing.com has some article about the really cheap fan solutions, look it up.... and eat more vegetables and fruits !
I read about them and saw an online review where they tested them and they seemed to work ok. As long as you have the right filter of course.
Never got around to buying one but I really should.

Are you talking about internet filters?
I thought from what I read in this site
mostly about the vpns that no one should be writing about
and also from what I can't see on the net
that the internet in China is filtered enough
but ok
whatever turns you on!
Get the all in one fan with the filter installed. I think they call it the Turbo.
Installing, or strapping the filter to the front of a fan does not work. The air just finds a way around it.
Source: Yea, I tried the strap on method.
If you are serious about purifying your air you will need a "Oreck XL professional air purifier. It charges the particles entering the purifier with a negative charge and as the air continues through the purifier it meets a positive charged surface and is attracted to it. The dust is removed in a filter at the entrance to the purifier. All the filters can be cleaned and reused. I have one and it works like a charm. You can order one through Amazon or Ebay keep away from AliBaba.
Do they work.....? Hahahahahahaha....... That's a good one. No. No, they don't work. Hahahaha.
Many people do not realize that there are filters in the AC/Heat units here in China. Many Chinese do not even remember them. They are easy to clean and should be cleaned every 3-6 months. Usually, you pop the front cover off and then you will see the filters. Just take the out, clean under water, let dry, and then reinstall.
jetfire9000:
Lol. You mean those long air units that are hoisted up on the wall, with a hole drilled behind them to let the hoses go outside? The filters in them, as in the puny little wire mesh tray things in those units? Those are hardly the same quality as real filters that go in air conditioner/ heater units. Those little wire mesh tray things are far from the very finely meshed filters you see in "normal" air conditioners. The so called filters in my personal unit can catch some large dust particles for sure, but I still feel like I'm living in the dustiest room in the dustiest city in the world! Mainly because the "filters" don't do crap. Mainly cause those aren't real filters, Lol.
DrMonkey:
I only see people cleaning the air-con units filters once, when the unit stopped to work. Where I live, they never been cleaned in years.
Just go ahead and get yourself a real air purifying unit. There's no need in investing any amount of cash for some cruddy fan with a filter strapped on the front when you don't even know if it works. Some air units claim to ionize particles so that they get trapped the second time they get sucked in. I am not sure if a fan with a filter strapped to it would do that. I'm also not sure if that function itself is a substantial one for air purifying though. All I know is I have an air purifying unit, and I love it!
I've got 3 of those cheap DIY style filter-strapped-to-a-fan setups. The filters are HEPA rated, and I did my best to ensure minimal bypass of air around the filters. Within just a few days of use, you can see the filter starting to turn colors. After a couple weeks, it will be noticeably black. They say they're good for 3 months or so, depending on use and pollution levels.
So the answer to the question: "Do they work?" Yes, they work....the black shit in the filter that's subsequently not in my breathing air is proof enough. Compared to a much more expensive ionizing air filter unit? I have no idea. PM 2.5 levels are typically in the 100-200 range here (IE, not apocalyptic levels), so I feel like it's doing enough. I got mine from smartairfilters.com's taobao store. Their main website details some testing they did of their DIY unit versus popular dedicated air filter machines.
bill8899:
Did you buy a regular fan and attach the smartair? I had a hell of a time setting it up. Always had 97%* of the air go around the filter.
They are darn good filters. I'll just buy their Turbo or whatever they call it.
Glad the DIY worked for you.
cooter:
I bought the fan/filter combo that they offer. I have one of the smaller units, and 2 of their larger units (they call it the cannon). For the smaller unit, they ship it with the front fan guard removed, allowing a more flush fit between the fan and the filter. For the larger unit, you remove the fan guard by yourself....super easy, remove 4 screws with the included screwdriver (also used to attach the base support legs).
