Q: Foreigner attempts to rape Chinese girl - Chinese netizen reaction over the top?

So...by now you've probably heard about the foreigner in Beijing who attempted to rape a Chinese girl and got subsequently beaten the living crap out of. (If you haven't, here's the video: http://www.91danji.com/news/26874.html)

Now, let me make this clear: in no way, shape or form do I condone rape. I think this foreigner needs to pay the price, as according to Chinese law. But...I honestly feel like the Chinese reaction on the net is completely blown out of proportion.

Earlier today, we had an angry post on this Answer section from some random Chinese. The video on youku, which only recently went up, already has 10k comments from Chinese, many of them targeting ALL OF US.

Earlier this afternoon, I received an email from a Chinese friend of mine, who told me to be careful in the streets (as I have short hair, not unlike that guy in the video), and that the reputation of foreigners in China had suffered considerably because of this...the GLOBAL REPUTATION of foreigners in China.

Seriously...there are rape stories in China every single day. Is this particular story not being used as an excuse to release other pent up hatred and frustration toward all foreigners living here?

edit: also, as much as this foreigner deserves to pay, I completely disagree with the way he was beaten the crap out of. Even when he was flat on the road, with the police car RIGHT THERE, he was still getting kicked around. Not right.

Rakifi, I didn't expect that anyone would think it's ok to rape people. But to my surprise, I saw many comments that said that guy was only drunk, or they were dating with each other or any lame excuses. Crime is crime. Making excuses for crime isnt a way to show that is right to rape people. Rape someone then i give you some excuses and then do it again and then give you excuses. isnt it disgusting? I hate people who makes excuese.

Don't know enough about the story to comment on guilt. What I do know is that rape is abhorrent and almost all here have stated that as their base argument. What some have tried to state is the trial by video or mob is not the way to determine guilt.

My biggest concern is the outrage over this (rightly so if the Pom committed the act) compared to the lack of outrage at the general treatment of many women by local men. No I am not stereotyping all  Chinese men because many I know are very caring husbands or boyfriends but the is also much evidence of a far higher percentage of abuse of all kinds to women here that is swept under the carpet because of the normal not my business attitude or the power held by the men who perpetrate this abuse. I believe sex coerced  by power is also a form of rape.

1, that bold British guy deserve punishment, those few kicks are nothing, I've seen people beaten up thieves in public (100 times worse than that)

2, hating all foreigners are not fair.

Rachel126. NOT ONE PERSON HERE has said it is okay to rape anyone. You are letting your hatred of foreign people get in the way of logic. People have said the person should be legally prosecuted.

People have also saud, the Chinese should not use this as an excuse to write hatefilled messages about ALL foreign people. And no, British people should not be ashamed. THey don't know this person and they are not responsible for this person.

As a Chinese person are you responsible for this?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Tim_McLean

Do you feel ashamed as a Chinese person for the murder of Tim McLean?

Grow up.

Or how about this? Do you feel ashamed for the murder of Diana O Brien?

Take another at the video and watch closely as she transfers her cell phone from one hand to the other as she is getting up. It just seems strange to me that she would have the presence of mind to hang on to her phone during such a stressful and traumatic experience. Just a thought.

Just heard about this this morning.  I have to say I would beat this shit out of this guy for two reasons, one for attempted rape but two for giving the Chinese another excuse to hate us.   The Chinese don't hate stuff like this, they love it, because it proves what their brainwashing regime tells them is true: that all foreigners are rapists, killers, etc and should be beaten to death.

Thanks d1ck for helping prove the Chinese are right.   I'm so glad I'm not in Beijing cos I'm British and I get enough grief as it is.

I just watched that video posted by someone with the 2 chinese guys talking. the fat guy is the guy who filmed it. He says there were quite a few people there just watching. I know the Chinese love to watch a good fight or the police giving someone a ticket but I find it hard to believe they would watch someone being raped. At the end of the scene he condems those just watching but he himseld said he want sure at first what was happening, he thought they might be a couple arguing. If the guys was trying to rape her then fine he deserves all he gets and more, but something doesnt seem right. Why would people be stood around watching?

I don't think I have the right to say what punishment he deserves, but if it was attempted, he should definitely get time in jail, and if he raped her, maybe most of his life in jail. I am always very careful about where I go or who I spend time with. If I don't feel comfortable around someone, of course I am not going to go somewhere alone with him. There are very few guys that I feel really comfortable around, men that I would trust. I know that the best way to stop something like this is prevention, to be careful. At home, we're told to watch our drink at the bar or at a party. But are girls here in China warned about these sorts of things? When rape happens, can they depend on the law? Maybe the netizens are overreacting, but how often is something like this caught on tape? How stupid can this man be? Perhaps he will go to jail, but what if he is deported? What then?

I don't understand the pair in the subway together picture. Had he chosen her as the target from the subway and followed her up to the road?

It's good he was a big enough retard to try and rape her in a clearly open area so he can get caught and locked the hell up.

Yanno, I'd rather see some dude getting the shit beat out of him for possibly attempting to rape someone, than him getting beat up for accidently spitting on someone's shoe or losing a bet on a game or spilling a drink on someone.

Two weeks ago I was sitting in the last row of seats on the bus. The bus wasn't to crowded and there were plenty of empty seats. A middle aged CHINESE bald man sat next to me and spread his legs wide and kept rubbing his arm against mine.

I figured he was just an uneducated low class guy who trys to take all the space.

After moving my arm several times away from his sweaty arm he put his hand under his leg close to mine. I moved as far away from this guy as I could and looked out the window. A few minuets later I felt a tapping on my shoulder and he began speaking chinese to me...I said NO NO NO...and he grabbed my thigh and started rubbing it.

I pushed the guys hand off and said NO!! BUHAO!!.

Two minutes later the guy grabbed my arm with two hands and rubbed it i pushed him off and he went to get off the bus giving me a little faggot eye while he was walking away.

This guy pissed me off so bad I was just afraid of beating his ass and getting kicked out of china.

In my whole life I never had a faggot try to talk to me and never have a faggot try to grab my stick on a bus. Theres all kinds of perverted people out there.

1 He's an exception.

2 It proves that bad guys are everywhere again.

3 I do not know the best punishment solution for this moron, and he just suffered what he deserved to . Imagine, if your intimacy  happens to this monster, what's your first response and what will you do?

This guy is clearly a piece of shit. I have never hit anyone in my life, and do feel distrubed watching him get hit but this piece of shit is the scum of the earth and deserves to be killed. If it wasn't for some standing up to him this guy would have raped this girl and ruined her life. I wish every rapist would receive this punishment, maybe it will send a message to others who thinks rape would be a fun thing to do. Thank you for all the Chinese people who helped stop this and made him pay.

Well, not to incite anything here but I'm only glad he wasn't black.
Chinese people tend to think extremely illogically when it comes to black people. I'd probably be dodging punches on the subway right now if that was the case. I pray it never happens.
The only reason the Chinese are so angry is because of insecurity. Deep down they know White guys get Chinese girls easy because of good looks(in comparison with chinese guys as commonly perceived by Chinese girls), sexual prowess, nationality etc They just want to justify their jealousy and hate. They know that this is just one person who doesn't represent every British national but spewing hate makes them feel better. Thus the ridiculously huge avalanche of responses to this whole mess.
Personally, that video tells me nothing. It looks like a setup if anything. too  many edits. too many absurd reactions. I won't pass final judgement but I think there's more to the story than what we've been given.

A:Going to HK would be the best bet I reckon, especially if you were looking for a church wedding. Chinese weddings are pretty grim IMO - you go to a barren govt dept with souless officials and navigate red tape so some guy can give you a red stamp and a marriage book. You get expensive pictures taken of you both posing in places you'd never go to in everyday life that is somehow supposed to represent your wedding, then a while later it's off to a restaurant where a game show host kind of guy makes sure it's as tacky as possible while the guests eat as fast as they can so they can leave as soon as they finish eating and gave you money. Hell, I'd go to Thailand or the Philippines and get married in Paradise.   -- Stiggs
