Q: How to celebrate my birthday?

My birthday will be coming this month.I am inviting some chinese and westerners to come to my birthday.

But if I have like 10 people come to my birthday, should I pay them all to come to the dinner? It's like a Chinese way to celebrate the birthday.

Or I make them to split the bills?

Where do you suggest to go?

I have may be like 2 Chinese and 8 westerners come to my birthday.

One American asked me what I would buy him to drink if he comes to my birthdaycrying

Friends that need to be paid for are not  friends.

Here's what you should have done. Invite them out to dinner/ drinks, tell them it will be AA/ Dutch. Those that show up, surprise them by treating them and tell them to keep it secret. Life is too short to waste on fake friends.

Birthdays are hard, All foreigners know that in China the birthday girl/boy must pay. So why do you want to treat them differently??? if it was just Chinese you would surely pay. But because you invite foreigners now you want them to pay?? Thats not fair.

I have had the same friends for years, so every birthday they pay for me, but I had to do the work first.  My first birthday, i paid.  Then when one of their birthday came, I paid too. And I said he shouldnt need to pay on his birthday.  Every year since my friends have paid for me.

But if your going to invite a bunch of new people every year then your going to have to pay, and if you dont want to pay then dont invite so many people.

yeah, don't ruin your BirthDay by turning it into a StressDay worrying about money. It's not going to be very enjoyable spending 1000+¥ on something you had really rather not spend it on just for the sake of some 'custom'.  Invite your few best friends to go and do something you truly enjoy.

I spent like 200 RMB on my birthday. Just had homemade lunch with some friends of mine.

A:Going to HK would be the best bet I reckon, especially if you were looking for a church wedding. Chinese weddings are pretty grim IMO - you go to a barren govt dept with souless officials and navigate red tape so some guy can give you a red stamp and a marriage book. You get expensive pictures taken of you both posing in places you'd never go to in everyday life that is somehow supposed to represent your wedding, then a while later it's off to a restaurant where a game show host kind of guy makes sure it's as tacky as possible while the guests eat as fast as they can so they can leave as soon as they finish eating and gave you money. Hell, I'd go to Thailand or the Philippines and get married in Paradise.   -- Stiggs
