Q: Less Expensive Hotels/Motels near Hongqiao Airport. Any recommendations?
Hey all,
My company is looking to put me in China for a week in Shanghai. I don't trust websites like Priceline.com because they're generally overpriced. I'm looking for a decent hotel near the Hongqiao airport. Decent for me is simply a hotel that has a bed, toilet, and shower.
Since I'm going to try to get them to let me stay for another week or two so I can visit family, friends, and pay my respects at a grave, I'd have to justify it by offsetting the cost somehow. The company doesn't want me to pay for it myself, and they won't pay for an extra 2 weeks of five star hotels.
Looking for something in the $40 or less range. The cheaper, the better. I'm not picky.

Isn't there a 7 Days Inn near there, not that I have tried one near Hongqiao but the chain has never disappointed me.

Try finding a hostel. Many of them have private rooms. They are not all dorm style.

Actually, I stayed at a private room in a hostel in SH - JingAn Temple area.. quite nice!! As good as any (well, no, obviously not) hotel I was in... certainly as equal to any other for the same price (around 200RMB). Breakfast wasn't too bad, and it was quiet season, so not so much noise... No complaints at all! (I think)

I've stayed in some great hostels in China. In private rooms. Good facilities, interesting people, cheap beer. I prefer them to staying in expensive hotels if I'm on my own as you'll always find someone to chat or hang out with.
A couple of things...
Firstly, $40US is currently about 250RMB... so yes, there's quite a few you can get for that and below.. Jinjiang, Motel156/256, 7Days Inn, Home Inn, Hanting (Express), etc chains can all do that (depending on what days). Also, be aware of holidays...what dates are you looking at? DragonBoat festival is coming up... So too are school holidays... (FTR, I just did a quick search on C-trip, and got pages of places that I'd be willing to stay in for below 300 (minimum minimum) and many even below 200).
Secondly, does it need to be near HQ? Or just easy access to it? If you're on Line 2 or 10, you'll probably be able to find a lot more available. Personally, I'd suggest line 10, as it's not as crowded as line 2 (which goes down to PuDong Airport.. sort of... as well as through more popular places - Century Ave, ZhongShan Park, JingAn Temple, etc). Of course, you might want access to those places... But the subway system is pretty good for getting around. Plenty of places can get you to HQ within 20-30 mins.
Line 10 also takes you to both airport terminals, and the train station, whereas Line 2 only takes you to airport terminal 2, and the train station (and beyond).
Personally, I use C-Trip. It might be a bit more expensive, but still, it's not too bad.
Book the room using the Chinese version of the website to save money. It's crazy, but the prices are not always the same if using the English version. I've found early bird specials for 3 star hotels in Beijing for 110rmb and the places were decent! Elong can be great.
Check out Agoda.com. If you book ahead of time you save money. You can narrow down your search by region or star rating. Although star ratings for hotels in China makes no sense.
Who needs a hotel when you can sleep in the 24 hour McDonalds/KFCs?
Baolong homelike Hotel which is on Hami Road just off Hongqiao Road. It is good value, clean, good location and about 1.5km from T2.
