Q: Tibet-Sichuan route drivers stop giving rides to backpackets. Good Samaritans with takers no more?

Local article dated Oct. 8, 2017 (translated by baidu) tells why, after the writer's interviewing a seasoned driver of the Tibet Sichuan route, drivers stop giving rides.

"He is a warm-hearted man, he said that, before, anyone with their thumbs up asking for a ride he always stops.  When he sees some of the backpackets carrying heavy bags, look distressed he would even ask if they need a lift.

He says, ' it is effortless, it wouldn't cost more fuel by adding one passenger'. But now he ignores them. What are the reasons for this change of mind?

First of all, bad publicity. A few days ago, he has his usual run on Sichuan Tibet route. He  gives  a cheerful, talkative young man a ride. In the middle of the trip he suddenly asks him, "when you give female passengers rides do you ask for some form of reward?"

He is offended by the lowness of his question and drops him off at the next gasoline station. The guy starts swearing as he lets him off.

The internet is filled with with 'leg-spreading  travel' reports that even a guy like hin, who does not frequent the internet hears of them. Kind heartedness is one thing, he does not want to be associated with immoral behaviors. He puts up a "no backpacker rides" sign these days.

Secondly, the low quality of these people is well known.  Not even a thank you when he buys them water or snacks.  Some just walk off as if he owes them the meal he buys them upon seeing their hungry looks. These people are shameless.

Thirdly,  they have themselves to blame when they brag everywhere they go that they successfully tour Tibet for 600 yuan.

Fourthly, no lower limit.  He says a peer of him who kindly gives a backpacker finds his wallet missing.

At another occasion there is a tire puncture. The backpacker gets  out of the car, says nothing and walks off.

No wonder the drivers are not giving them rides anymore.

I must be very nieves as I really didn't know that things were that way.  I guess that comes from being a peasant here in rural east Texas, where many a day I do not encounter any other humans.  My nearest neighbor is almost 1/4 mile away.  Do not have to worry nor  compare financial status with any one for any reason.

A:Going to HK would be the best bet I reckon, especially if you were looking for a church wedding. Chinese weddings are pretty grim IMO - you go to a barren govt dept with souless officials and navigate red tape so some guy can give you a red stamp and a marriage book. You get expensive pictures taken of you both posing in places you'd never go to in everyday life that is somehow supposed to represent your wedding, then a while later it's off to a restaurant where a game show host kind of guy makes sure it's as tacky as possible while the guests eat as fast as they can so they can leave as soon as they finish eating and gave you money. Hell, I'd go to Thailand or the Philippines and get married in Paradise.   -- Stiggs
