Q: what about "face" in Your home country (not China)?

Dear Expats, laowais etc.

Is "face thing" reserved only for China? or that "happens" also in Your home country?

- buying products that You barely can afford, that gives some "prestige"
- doing things under "social influence",  that You "have to do that way" in Your society?
...etc

I'll give few examples from Poland:
- poor family in rural area have to perform 2-days wedding party, even if they will pay for this for many years
- manager or owner of own business have to have good car, and change it for a new model even if older one is in good shape... otherwise he can be considered as "poor"
- the same with mobile phones - if You don't have some new model, You may look "poor" between businessmans (excluding some "legendary" nokias off course Smile )
- if You want to do "big business" it is better to go to the events where You will know "right persons" of both business, government or ... "other business" Wink

Isn't that similar to "face gaining" in China? That may not be the same "importance" but... doesn't it look familiar?

Regardless of country, anyone who makes any decisions about their lives based on what strangers will think about them is an idiot.  That being said there are idiots of this sort in every country.  These are the idiots that keep companies like D&G, Rolls Royce and LV in business.  Not hating though.  If I could make something with my initials on it and charge 1000x what it cost me to make it I would too.

I don't think having nice things is quite what Chinese face is all about.

Honestly I don't know what it is exactly about, but I think it has a heck of a lot more to do with their lives than just whether they own something nice or not.

But to be honest, I could care less. I get a kick out of when some dolt loses 'face' because of his retarded actions. example. The other day I called this guy a 'bad boy' for driving his automobile on the pedestrian footpath. It was beyond funny. The other Chinese kinda giggled and looked at him, and he nearly went apoplectic,,,  he kinda yelled at me,,, 'no, u the bad boy!'. sth like that anyway. I sure wish coulda posted on YouTube.  Oh, he had people in the car too.  I imagine he is still trying to find his lost face...  angel

Face is universal, it's everywhere, we just don't have a specific name for it in the west.

showing  of by spending a lot of money is the fools idea of having face or glory.

not sure if this is true but ive been told that people in china will avoid saying sorry so they dont lose face, back at home if you can admit you are wrong that will gain you respect, if you pretend like you did nothing wrong while every knows u did wrong u look like an ass

Of course there is some version of face in every country, it just takes different forms. For example, you gain face (aka respect) in some countries by being respectful, honest, dependable. You can gain face by knowing the right people or owning cool things (which makes others jealous). You can gain face by being talented or beautiful, so that others admire you. You can gain admiration from doing stupid stuff too, otherwise there would be no such thing as reality television.

In my lifetime in Canada, although I suppose the basic concept of Face was something I was aware of, I am 100% sure it was not this all encompassing factor that dictated my actions when dealing with other people. Of course I would consider other's feelings when interacting but I would rarely venture so far as to purposely not tell the truth for fear that it would result in a loss of the "coveted" Face. Not only has it taken over the society here but it has a direct influence i how the Chinese relate to one another everyday and it all seems very fake to me. According to my in-laws, I have a lot to learn, ...I'm just not sure I am cut out for that kind of silliness.

I use the idea put forward by a character (I forget which one) in James Clavell's 'Noble House'.

I'm Laoiwei I have no face to lose. I find life easier that way.

In the UK I act according to my feelings except in that at work I will dress and act in a manner that doesn't reflect badly either on myself or the company I represent. That is as far as I go.

Hi White Bear,

Good point and interesting examples.

There's plenty of experts who will tell us what 'face' really means in china, maybe mention something about guan xi and mian zi. This is not Chinese thing only, same as fa-piao is not a Chinese thing, they just happen to have a name for it that we - foreigners - remember.

In Poland its equivalent is as simple as "znajomosci" and I don't need to tell you anything more. Translate it to English maybe "connections" is good word ?

Definitely in the details it will be different across countries, how you use it, how you can get it, but the principle is the same.

In the USA, face is only a little important...

You don't want to be that hick that drives around in the rust bucket Ford truck from the 1970s that has got one door duct taped shut, and "I love Jesus" bumper stickers everywhere trying to cover up the fact that large chunks of his truck have rusted out and fallen off.

But at the same time, you don't want to be that self-absorbed guy who drives a prius everywhere with the "stop global warming" bumper sticker and thinks he's a better person than 99.9% of all other people just because he drives an expensive hybrid car... Completely oblivious of the fact that motorcycles and smaller, lighter cars get much better gas mileage and have much lower carbon footprints than his prius..

In the USA, IMO, the middle class has the most face.. The upper class aside from people like Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, and Gabe Newell have no face.. And the lower class people typically have no face as well.... and most people don't care whether you have face or not, they're just glad they're not you, especially if you drive the rust bucket that's always broken down on the side of the road.

A:Going to HK would be the best bet I reckon, especially if you were looking for a church wedding. Chinese weddings are pretty grim IMO - you go to a barren govt dept with souless officials and navigate red tape so some guy can give you a red stamp and a marriage book. You get expensive pictures taken of you both posing in places you'd never go to in everyday life that is somehow supposed to represent your wedding, then a while later it's off to a restaurant where a game show host kind of guy makes sure it's as tacky as possible while the guests eat as fast as they can so they can leave as soon as they finish eating and gave you money. Hell, I'd go to Thailand or the Philippines and get married in Paradise.   -- Stiggs
