they take examination, highly competitive just like  SAT 1 & 2 , MCAT, GRE,etc ... they name it Zhongkao and gaokao testing.there is an article on it named A CRASH COURSE ON THE CHINESE EDUCATION SYSTEM DATED 24TH JULY.  check it out maybe it helps.
