Q: What happens if a foreigner goes to the Shanghai marriage market?

Everyone's heard about the park in Shanghai where people go and post their info (sex, age, height, salary, car, house, etc...) in the hope of finding a good 'mate'.

Any foreigners ever go there? What would happen if a foreigner posted their info?

Perhaps nothing but there should be some kind of rules, as you can see most of them are put by their parents.

In case you go on your own a first condition to get more hits would be that you speak and read chinese fairly enough to talk and "negotiate" there.

I was there once with some friends, just having a look and a man said hi, I replied and he spoke poor english but it was understoodable. He asked me if I was interested in finding a girl there, I obviously became curious and said yes, then he said his daughter wants & needs to get american visa (even when Im not american but I guess he thought I am haha) so he said he's looking for an arranged marriage for her daughter and bla, bla bla... after his whole story I just said that's not what I want and left, btw lots of people came around, u know how people is very curious most of times.

If you r interested in getting someone there go on your own and take it seriously; even if you put your ad in english, based in my experience you could be able to get something...

I'm assuming you're asking purely hypothetically, 'cause really, why would you want to?

What reasons would a girl have to marry a foreigner about whom she knew nothing or very little? .... Exactly.

Exactly, and as that view is pretty alien to most Westerners, again my question...

As others have said, I suppose this is a purely hypothetical question, but if stereotypes hold any inkling of truth, you'd probably be swarmed with parents and offers pretty quickly. I have a couple of friends who live in Shanghai and said that place was heaven on earth for nondescript aged foreigners, who can get really attractive Chinese girlfriends.

But again, you go in there with the knowledge of the expectations: that it's for a very serious relationship that could rapidly evolve into marriage.

Still, it would be interesting, for the fun of it, to see the foreigner swarmed by the crowd like crumbs thrown into fish-infested waters. Wink

It's been really fun and interesting how foreigners' and Chinese' view on marriage greatly differs. From my own understanding, it is common and universally-accepted that a woman would look for a husband who is stable and reliable, apart from being responsible and loving. However, unfortunately here in China, the idea of Chinese women marrying a well-off man for convenience is being exaggerated. Too bad for those many Chinese women who would marry someone because of trust since they are being stereotyped. We cannot totally put all the judgment on them. Nevertheless, it is difficult for many Chinese women to change the foreigners' minds unless there would be some sort of big change coming from themselves.

A:Going to HK would be the best bet I reckon, especially if you were looking for a church wedding. Chinese weddings are pretty grim IMO - you go to a barren govt dept with souless officials and navigate red tape so some guy can give you a red stamp and a marriage book. You get expensive pictures taken of you both posing in places you'd never go to in everyday life that is somehow supposed to represent your wedding, then a while later it's off to a restaurant where a game show host kind of guy makes sure it's as tacky as possible while the guests eat as fast as they can so they can leave as soon as they finish eating and gave you money. Hell, I'd go to Thailand or the Philippines and get married in Paradise.   -- Stiggs
