I have no clue what that means but seeing those harmonious society signs everywhere on red banners, or with grainy photos of a forest or sometimes a large-eyed cartoon character, in a country like China, makes it all seem like a wacky parody of a 70s sci-fi b-movie.

It was one of Hu Jintao's policy initiatives. Often when Communist countries role out some grand new policy agenda they pair an economic policy with a social policy. A good example of this kind of thing was when Gorbachev attached Glasnost, which was intended to create a greater degree of transparency in government, with Perestroika, economic restructuring. Jiang Zemin's "Three Represents" is another. Here the Harmonious Society was attached to what was called the Scientific Development Concept, which was the idea that the government would use economic stimulus in poor rural areas while relying on scientific development to power economic growth in urban areas. The end result was supposed to be a healthier Chinese middle class both in the cities and out in the country side. The Harmonious Society was the idea that a larger middle class would help China remain socially stable as it becomes more open.

Truth is, People are animals.  Put animals together and these things happen. Just somewhere along the line, we began to feel we were not animals.  That is good I suppose, but it is not correct.

Mr. Golding looked into this for us. If you would care to know more... follow the link.

People do screwed up things. I knew a New Zealand guy who hung a nine year old student out of a 30 story window till the boy wet himself. People do screwed up things.

A:Going to HK would be the best bet I reckon, especially if you were looking for a church wedding. Chinese weddings are pretty grim IMO - you go to a barren govt dept with souless officials and navigate red tape so some guy can give you a red stamp and a marriage book. You get expensive pictures taken of you both posing in places you'd never go to in everyday life that is somehow supposed to represent your wedding, then a while later it's off to a restaurant where a game show host kind of guy makes sure it's as tacky as possible while the guests eat as fast as they can so they can leave as soon as they finish eating and gave you money. Hell, I'd go to Thailand or the Philippines and get married in Paradise.   -- Stiggs
