Q: What's going through the minds of the Chinese middle class now?
Most of the 'savings' of the ordinary Chinese middle class is trapped in real estate, directly or indirectly. The rich (politically corrupt + business) have already moved the bulk of their money overseas. 50 million condos are empty. 22% of total RE is non-occupied! Amount of capital (state or otherwise) in non-economic projects-boondoggles are understated. Meanwhile, Chinese projection of military power and subjugation of its own citizens under an Orwellian monster state proceeds at an increasing pace.

Especially now that the US of A is in control by the biggest security threat it has ever faced. An enemy from within. America's top military leaders have resigned, along with the best people that could lead the States. All of this will cause other countries to missjudge the US and go to war. Nobody did anything when the Russians waltzed into Crimea. It wasn't really possible for the west to do anything anyway. This will also be the case close to Japan. And lets not forget that someone may be looking for payback (circa 1930s). The problem is when someone attacks the US thinking that the Americans are weak. That happened in 1941.
We know the result. But today, someone will use an ICBM to prevent the Americans from winning again. In that case humanity will cease to exist.

That's not so bad, mutual destruction of China and America and Russians run the world. The world would be in good shape, Russians are lousy at running anything so the rest of the world would be pretty happy about that. Russia has reverted back from progressive and secular dogma, so traditional cultures will love that. It sounds like a great way to get rid of debt and materialism and of course multculturalism. Nice legacy to leave behind when a mushroom cloud takes me away.
Taiwan strait ...
President Xi Orders Chinese Army To "Prepare For War"
"China is increasing its military training so that it has the best solutions for the worst outcomes, either related to the US or across the [Taiwan] strait."

The former vice president Joe Biden stated in an interview one time if things got really bad in the SCS that America could arm Japan with nukes in 30 days or less. If the flunky vice president who only attends funerals is saying this, the policies and plans are already set up to make it happen if necessary.

I think the average Chinese person probably still has faith in the party to keep them prosperous and achieve the Chinese dream - whatever that is.
The party is very good at manipulating opinions via the media and it's not like most people can get on google and see a different perspective. And I don't think Chinese really even question the narrative much, even if they do have the means.
As far as the average Zhou is concerned when something bad for China happens it's the fault of the West (America) who are jealous of China's prosperity and 5000 year history and so they try to keep China down.

Many you tube videos of some academic economist from Beijing that slipped that annual GDP for 2018 was only 1.67 percent. Big cover up of this detail.

Yeah Diver. I decided last week to get daughter making tea. I ripped the spare bedroom apart to find my teapot. Cups long gone, so local shop to buy cups, strainer, jug etc.. I wikied it. 5000 years of history? Chinese culture? Within one week, my 6 year old knows more about Chinese tea than her mum and grandma do. In fact, couple of weeks ago the daughter and I were out and about on the ebike and visited a tea shop I know. Bought a 2009 cake of puer tea as a gift for grandma. Grandma stuffed it into a red carrier and pushed it under the bed. Culture my arse. Its my job, as an evil foreigner to teach tea to my Chinese daughter.
diverdude1:
@ Scots;;;; not just saying this,,, but I always preferred India tea. Twinings has it figured out the best I can tell... mmmmmm,,,, Earl Grey.... now that's some tea ~

@Divedude.
Yeah I've had that ancient thing thrown at me too, it seems to be one of the go to responses to any kind of butthurt or used as a bragging point - China is better than country X because 5000 years....
I never gave a shit either. It might be more impressive as a bragging point if i could go and see actual ancient stuff but the Chinese destroyed most of it and only stopped wrecking it when international historical groups pointed out how valuable some of the artifacts - like the great wall for example - were and please stop smashing it up, you could be selling tickets to visit it instead.
diverdude1:
yeah,,,, some kinda baked-in 'go to' response for them. I felt like escalating it by telling him to stay on the subject, we were discussing the lack of discipline in the classroom, but I knew it was dead-end path. He just didn't know how to respond to my assertions, so he told me China is an ancient country. I should have gone all US smart-aleck humor on him and said something like- well, in that case everything is fine. If I had just known that Chinerland was ancient then I would easily accept that it is ok for students to run around throwing things, screaming, giggling, chatting with others, putting forth zero effort. I just was unaware at the time that Chiner is ancient. Clears everything right up!
ambivalentmace:
You cant play the superior ancient 5000 year bullshit and then the next day play the humiliation, poor, still developing card the next. you are a strong cultural country rich in heritage and status or you are not. Make up your mind.
PulSartre:
I had a similar experience in the way a 7 grader reasoned to be enough to go around the same "China has 5000 years of history" answer. It was about war and stuff like that, heavy for them to learn to reason whether their country should go or not on war with other predilect enemies. They had a time to reflect upon the pros and cons and bring about its benefits, risks at stake and how China should play it's role as a superpower in the event of a coming war.
My students, all up sleeves and ready to think, pretend and learn to do so, proved to do a great job. They deployed their weaponry, and through the power of their ideas unleashed a great demonstration of arguments as to why China shouldn't go at war with anyone. Some hit at my heart in amazement at how much sense of danger that would pose to their own human values, family, future of the children and they brought facts in terms of both economical costs and time to make the country work aagain s it does today.
Suddenly, this boy stands up, first line of the attack and shoots at me with these few words: "China must go to war because we have a 5000 years of history!"
Under my best stage of will and endeavor and I couldn't find and relevant connection of the topic and his answer. I was in a state of intentelectual l bewilderment as though I saw the light, and realized I couldn't make any sense of it at all. It's classmates laughed at him while I felt good about his mates' reactions. Ridiculed somehow, he moved back to his seat proud however to have let that bird fly out of his mouth.
When it comes to such nonsense, I simply don't bother to convince otherwise anyone.
America seems to have a different definition of middle class than the rest of the world. I am white collar working class. It seems anyone in America not on food stamps is middle class.
I am with John Major, the Tory who followed Thatcher.. work towards classless society.
diverdude1:
well,,, that sure came out of nowhere....
..... oops,,, my mistake,,, you are referencing the OP.Quinn68:
"Pew defines the middle class as those earning between two-thirds and double the median household income. This means that the category of middle-income is made up of people making somewhere between $40,500 and $122,000. Those making less than $39,500 make up the lower-income bracket."
In my state food stamps were replaced with what's called an "independence card" complete with an American flag on it so it looks less stigmatizing for the recipient. God forbid we hurt their feelings and make them feel marginalized.
ScotsAlan:
Yeah, God forbid that ppl picking amazon parcels feel stigmitised that they need food stamps to survive. Corporate welfare and all that.
