It's the same criticism Americans (and the rest) made about the British earlier last century. It's just one of those things that should improve over time.

What I hate to see is some of the kids I teach open their mouths and display rows of stinking black baby teeth. If this was back home social services would be called in.

poor healthcare. stone age thinking. in usa  kids get free healthcare and therefore their teeth are straightened  (braces) in childhood. also children in the usa eat good baby food so there is no pressure put on their growing teeth. here (stone age thinking) they make children eat tough foods at young age so they teeth deform from having to eat tough foods rather than soft foods

It's not important to them. I can understand not bothering to straighten your teeth. That costs money, and it's not necessary to have a healthy mouth. And I have seen some people here with beautiful, straight teeth that is probably natural (and I'm jealous of those people). However, what's truly horrible is what crimo mentioned, that no one takes care of baby teeth. I can understand why people wouldn't think they're important. They just lose them anyway, so why bother? But we know that healthy baby teeth are necessary to prevent rotting of the adult teeth before they come in, and it helps the adult teeth come in properly. With more knowledge, they'll understand this too, but that knowledge has not been spread to the masses.

As a kid, my mom took my sister and I to the dentist every 6 months, and even when I wasn't on my parents' insurance anymore, I still went. However, since I'm only in China for 10 months, I didn't think I'd risk going to the dentist just for a regular cleaning. I'll go this summer when I'm back home.

While crooked teeth are probably the result of not having braces, the tooth decay that I see can't be explained by that.

Many Chinese people do not have good toothbrushing habits. As far as I can tell, most do not floss their teeth.

I think another factor is heavy metals in water and food. Lead, especially, causes tooth decay.

I have perfect teeth. Westerners alwasy ask "Who is your dentist?" which I find strange as I've never been to the dentist.

A:Going to HK would be the best bet I reckon, especially if you were looking for a church wedding. Chinese weddings are pretty grim IMO - you go to a barren govt dept with souless officials and navigate red tape so some guy can give you a red stamp and a marriage book. You get expensive pictures taken of you both posing in places you'd never go to in everyday life that is somehow supposed to represent your wedding, then a while later it's off to a restaurant where a game show host kind of guy makes sure it's as tacky as possible while the guests eat as fast as they can so they can leave as soon as they finish eating and gave you money. Hell, I'd go to Thailand or the Philippines and get married in Paradise.   -- Stiggs
