Q: Why do Chinese women expect so much?

I don't get the whole thing about Chinese women all acting like little dolls that need to be cared for, pampered, etc...

It just seems like the trend here is for women to act like girls...helpless, cute, demanding, sulking, etc...I mean seriously, why can't they be a little more independent?

We're not your caretakers.

I think this is a big social problem that's going to continue to get worse in China.

I see a lot of marriages in China that are nothing more than a business relationship. It's not true love at all. Basically the deal is the man pays for everything and in exchange the women makes the man look good by having a wife and kids.

A serious problem I see with this is the number of men in China who now struggle too get a wife. Good honest hard working men who would make great husbands but end up single simply because they don't have enough money.  This causes many people to snap and I do believe it will lead to more cases of people raping and abusing women as a result.

As far as why this is the case in China. There's many reasons but I think the unbalanced ratio of women to men plays a big part. Simple supply and demand, the price goes up when the supply is lower.

It's called "Sa Jiao" (撒娇) and many (not all) Chinese women like to sajiao to their loved ones.

I think Wenna mentioned one part of sajiao, but it can be a lot more complicated than that. It drives most Western men (and even some Chinese men) mad as they view it as acting childish and too dependent. Here are two links that might help you understand a bit more.

That might because the defferent ways for communication. If you think that is a way for demanding more. Then just stop the relationship and look for a western girl.

Chinese women are really hard working and careing, you should really learn more about China.!

It has NOTHING to do with communication. It's called having a spoiled temperment and "me first' selfish, inconsiderate attitude! Then, add on the childish, immature personality that's already been mentioned! GO AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SOME Chinese women are hard-working while others are not. Regarding your comment about finding a Western gal, YOU don't tell people who they pursue!! Do you understand? :(

What a bunch of b.s.!!! YOU should learn more about other cultures..like in the West..where most women don't act like HIGHLY CHILDISH (SO ANNOYING!),UNFRIENDLY,ARROGANT,RUDE AND IMMATURE IDIOTS the way MANY CHINESE and KOREAN women do! :( It has nothing to do with communication! That is a bunch of garbage!! That is a TYPICAL B.S. Chinese excuse. :( I'm not even gonna discuss the RACIST and DISRESPECTFUL CHINESE and KOREAN FEMALES.

In short, because no one tells them it's disgusting to behave that way. Because some men like it when girls act like they are 12.. Who knows.. maybe it's sexy to have the women in your life act like a 12 year old and have the physique of a 12 year old boy too!

*P.S. Asking questions like this IS a way to learn about China, Juneyao! Some people were brought up in countries where they are encouraged to ask questions when you don't understand a concept.. not just to sit quietly and pretend you understand so you aren't the stand out.

Also, Chinese believe, perhaps rightly so, that this period in Chinese history is the time to go up that social ladder - lots of opportunities around. The gap is closing, and soon it'll be like Europe - fixed.

Also a cultural thing, where husbands are expected to provide apartment, car, money, etc...to their wives. If you want a long term relationship with any Chinese woman, you better 'show her the money'.

In exchange for that, she will 'do her part': act cute, girlish and absolutely 'adorable'. It's a question of taste - Chinese men like to feel empowered. Having to take care of their 'dependent gf' gets them that ego high. Go figure.

sa jiao is not just a Chinese thing. Japanese and Korean girls also participate. But it is a cultural difference and it should be respected. Western men may not prefer it (sometimes it makes me crazy. Sometimes I allow my girl to sa jaio me), it is the Chinese way. Do you expect all cultures to mature in the same fashion and speed? do you expect all cultures to hold your view of what "mature" should be?

Not all Chinese girls are that way, there are many who can take care of themselves. I'm ok with sa jiao, women all over the world sa jiao at one time or another. The problem is when a woman uses it all the time, then it is annoying. Obviously, if there was no one willing to take care of a girl like that, then she wouldn't be able to get a husband in the future. But someday that very girl will be married, with a hopefully happy husband. And if not, then she will learn her lesson and will have to grow up a little. Some guys like girls who are self-sufficient, some guys want to take care of someone that needs them. And why is it that only girls are getting blamed for this behavior? Aren't there guys who want to be pampered, where the girl does all the work to take care of him? That certainly happens too, let's not have double standards here. Even the women who sa jiao compliment their boyfriend, buy him a cake or do something special for him.

It really is a fascinating and disturbing social phenomenon. I have yet to hear a decent explanation for the so-called 'little spoiled bitch' problem with Chinese women. I want to throw out a sort of theory I am working on:

Part of this comes out of a 'vacuum' left in post-Mao China. Women must 'reinvent' their roles in a newly capitalist/westernized/modernized China.

It might be worth mentioning, the last 'ideal woman' to reference was the infamous, last and only Empress Cixi who was (it is rumoured or legend) a notorious spoiled bitch who had every demand of her 'neutered' man servants? (literally their balls removed for her).

But I believe the real culprit is the 'cultural vacuum' being re-filled with Korean and American 'romances'. Of course, to sell tickets the producers know there is nothing more appealing to a woman's purchase than unrealistic fantasies where beautiful rich young men grovel and beg and 'attend' to hysterical, emotional crying 'baby' girls. Who may even slap and emotionally abuse the man. Nevertheless, the Korean love drama will make it clear:  The most perfect man will appease her every emotional outburts, pouting, crying and even lower his head and finally do all she wants.

And the same ideals happen in the Hollywood and Western stories. The women are more independent yet their handsome rich successful boyfriends will do what? Entertain all their hysterical fits, crying, they will want to spend hours discussing her fears and tolerate all her irrational behavior AND give her a hug and buy her flowers after her outburts.

I believe many young Chinese women (without unlimited romance series to download for free) are filling a kind of cultural void with this nonsense.

Something must be done about this. You know I have had a number of discussions with other foreigners married to Chinese Mainland women. Often we come to the agreement all our wives are the most 'spoiled little bitches' we have ever feared to be with. Interesting, many of the same demanding, spoiled (act spoiled, act as rich princesses) these are girls from relatively poor villages in China. They are WORSE than the so-called 'Shanghai Snob' or 'Hong Kong Princesses'. Even more hysterical and demanding?

Well honestly, I have no solid theory yet. Maybe I just throw that out there and some social experts can work to find the real cure. I don't know. It is really something fascinating and terrorizing too.

Same, I was offline but I really needed to express my happiness to see not all the male foreigners in China have completely lost their minds. I truly and deeply do not understand how a foreign guy or even another Asian can be emotionally satisfied when having a relationship with a Mainland Chinese woman.

It's probably because some people including yourself expect so little so there has to be something inbetween to keep that balance going. Imagine the possibilities!

My Chinese girlfriend asks for nothing ( materially, financially) from me. She has, on several occasions, begged me not to 'waste' my money on her even though at such moments I really wanted to offer her something.I soon realised if I wanted to get her something I shud buy it when I am alone and just offer it to her, not take her out & ask her to get something.

What she 'demands' is that I spend time with her...she just wants to be around me, even when I cant talk to her because I am working on something...she tells me she doesn't care.

She is a type of person who discourages me from getting her material things, yet she has her own creative ways of surprising me with gifts. Her family isnt rich,though....just a daughter of a retired teacher and bus driver - average Chinese. So don't generalise that Chinese women are too demanding.

Bona, my wife is the same we joke sometimes about how expensive it is when spending anything up to 10yuan!!!! Seriously though I earn money in England and we will never be rich but can have a nice life here, travel when we want and buy what we want. It has taken her nearly six years to believe that we can afford things without having to worry about it.

You are right, there are many Chinese women who are not that demanding. Not everyone is a Shanghai gold digger.

Cause we have high quality of taste when it comes to women and with that taste comes too many responsibilities and payments to be done {iPads........iPhones........LV.........Gucci....and so on}..........so it is like this "No money no hottie".......Simple equation......get the hottie pay the money or sell the kidney..........Good Luck mates
