Q: Why they do not wash hands ?

I am talking about many chinese men, who really do not wash hands after using WC, some even do not flush toilet and do not wash hands, just go directly to office back and use the fax machine and so on, which is shared with all 200 people here. They looks nice, clean cloth but the hands ...

I saw also at many other places before come to Shanghai. Just wash hands before piss, but no after. Not all of them, but sure is not just few people. So dirty they are. crying

Logic  =   the dirtiest parts of your body are your hands, probably the cleanest parts of your body are your genitals.   Your dirty hands will contaminate your genitals, unless you piss on your hands, your genitals are still cleaner than your hands, so it's a better idea to clean your hands before you go for a piss than after.

This is not about gender, they all do, males and females.

Restaurants encourage so much their employees to do it but they're used to do it. I've found the situation 2 times in restaurant, girls working for the place dont wash them and just wanna go like that but at least those 2 times I made them return & wash.

My friends who come to visit also ask me that, specially girls. Do all chinese people dont wash their hands after toilet?  Of course not but I think is a high percentage of people who don't do it. Hygiene standards are so different here.

This may be an Urban myth but it still stands being retold.

In the UK many years ago, they used to put out plates of free peanuts for the drinking customers to enjoy. A few university research students took a few samples of these nuts from various bars around various cities and tested them. It turned out that on average they had over 50 different people's urine remains on the nuts!  Needless to say I've never eaten free nuts in a bar since.

This just goes to show that it is not just China, I see it all over the world and it irritates me no end. I now wash before AND after.

That's rubbish, Chinese men aren't any less cleanly than men anywhere else, in my experience the Chinese are very cleanly people indeed, they have no choice, they have to be to compensate for the fact that there are rats everywhere. I've even had people look at me like I was dirty because I licked my fingers after eating.

So anyway, do you spend a lot of time hanging around in public toilets watching guys?

It's because most don't like cold water and it takes a little bit longer for the water to warm up here. Something along the lines of warm/hot is healthy good for you cold is not! So you know wants they get the feeling that it's gonna be cold it's an automatic turnoff. It's like when you touch the stove when you were younger and you learned what hot was.

Here it's like the same thing but instead of hot being a warning it's actually the opposite Cold. If it's cold it's a no no!

Hadn't been for the hygiene and the serious threats it poses to anyone in China, the Culture shock wouldn't have been such an issue. It is everywhere, in the air, in the water, in the food, in the public places, public transportation, hospitals, schools, supermarkets, in the private and public life, indoor and outdoor. It's spitting everywhere, anytime, anywhere this much that it turns into an obsession, reaching levels beyond the Consciousness, down into the deepest  layers of the Unconsciousness, going intime with all the fears you can't control and turning your over night sleeping into a nightmare and the nightmare into a day by day reality. That's what then it reshapes your tastes into a sincere despise for the Culture of dirtiness of the Chinese people. That's an outstanding endeavor, a unique determination In China I've never found all round the world I traveled, that people compete to keep and getting physically and spiritually even dirtier.

I think a lot of it just comes down to lack of education about hygiene.

I work in an office with a lot of Chinese employees and I see some that do wash their hands and some that don't.  So there are some that certainly do.  Ironically I've noticed the ones that do almost always have lived abroad or studied abroad, I'm not sure if that plays a role in it.

At the end of the day though it's just lack of education.  Some people are more educated about hygiene than others.

I've also noticed some of  the kids I tutor in my home (aged 6-8 years old)  do the following 3 things quite often.... 1) Don't shut the door when using the bathroom 2) Don't flush  3) Don't wash their hands.

When you see it happening with kids that young then you KNOW it's an issue with parenting or society simply not teaching them certain bathroom habits.

When you see kids doing that, it makes more sense why you still see a lot of adults doning it.

Hygiene/bacteria are not the first things on Chinese peoples minds.  From a very young age we're taught to wash our hands, brush our teeth, attend health ed. classes in school, basically it's engrained in us.  Theres things that you and I might see and  think 'dang, thats nasty', but Chinese won't even bat a lash.  Basically, it boils down to education and sometimes even that doesn't make a difference.

A:Going to HK would be the best bet I reckon, especially if you were looking for a church wedding. Chinese weddings are pretty grim IMO - you go to a barren govt dept with souless officials and navigate red tape so some guy can give you a red stamp and a marriage book. You get expensive pictures taken of you both posing in places you'd never go to in everyday life that is somehow supposed to represent your wedding, then a while later it's off to a restaurant where a game show host kind of guy makes sure it's as tacky as possible while the guests eat as fast as they can so they can leave as soon as they finish eating and gave you money. Hell, I'd go to Thailand or the Philippines and get married in Paradise.   -- Stiggs
