Q: Yet another USA shooting

https://www.9news.com.au/2018/11/03/11/44/florida-yoga-class-shooting-on...

It's starting to be a way of life for Americans...no need to report normal behavior like this in the future.

This would never happen if the instructors teaching peace and serenity had an AR15 strapped to their backs....

Ok class, I'll guard the exits and provide covering fire while you relax, breathe and empty the mind of all distractions.

Stupid jokes aside, the world seems to becoming a more brutal, violent place. Here in NZ you're probably not going to get shot unless you're selling meth in the wrong street or not paying your supplier or something but it seems like the chances of being kicked into a coma for no reason outside a pub or walking home late at night are higher than they ever were. Or maybe it was always like that and I'm just getting older.

yeah, a darn yoga studio of all places!  thought all those cats were chill?  or was the cruel bastard not a part of it? I just read the headline, didn't read the story, like Phil said, it's so commonplace now I don't even read the stories anymore.  I'm just glad the POS did himself in too...

Something about a domestic dispute I think.... like you unless it's a mass shooting with some sort of agenda I don't really bother reading the details anymore.

It was probably some ex husband / boyfriend with a restraining order on him who decided to wreck some lives because his was crap at the moment.

Nothing to see here folks, business as usual, move on and hey, did you hear about the latest Hollywood divorce or that Trump tweeted something with a spelling mistake in it?

You have a jar of ten thousand skittles and two of them are nutters who want to go on a stabbing spree, do you give them all knives?

ScotsAlan:

How do you know 2 of them are nutters? I get your point hi2u, and its a good one. Knife crime in the UK is getting stupid, even though the UK has some of the toughest knife laws in the world. As stiggs mentions above, much of it will be gang on gang stuff. But there is probably innocent ppl getting randomly killed too. But here is the really sad part. Stabbings in the UK used to make national news. Especially when it was a teenager who died. The trial would be covered, and the verdict and sentence reported. But now each stabbing or shooting only gets a few lines. I used to live in London and I love the place. I follow the Mayor Sadiq Khan on twitter, and when he tweets about some new knife crime initiative he is lucky is he gets more than a few hundred likes. But there will be plenty of replies from the knuckle dragger breitbart brigade. I do agree however agree that Khan is not doing a good job re knife crime. Problem is, in my view, the killers dont read the news. They are enclosed within their peer group. It needs to be targeted on social media. News reports in feeds about crimes, trials, sentences. But this would be blatent government propaganda on private company websites. So not easy. I would give it a go tho. Get the reformed criminals on the case. Promote them as influencers. And do the old conservative stuff as well... do you know where your kids are?

I read somewhere today that there were people in the bar who were also at one of the other mass shootings. Think it was that really bad one, the one at the concert with the shooter in a hotel room.

Police Respond To Active Shooter Situation At North Carolina High School

Police was responding on Friday to active shooter situation at the Topsail High School, near Wilmington according to WECT, a local television station. Law enforcement sources say the scene is “still active.”

As authorities in Melbourne confirm that a stabbing attack that unfolded on a busy Melbourne street on Friday afternoon is believed to have been an act of terror, ISIS has stepped up and taken credit for the attack.

A man stabbed three people in Melbourne on Friday, killing one and wounding two before police fatally shot him in the chest. The incident was captured on video that has widely circulated on social media and local television. In the footage, the man can be seen lunging at two police officers as a car fire burned in the background. As the attacker repeatedly swung his knife at one officer, the other pulled out his firearm and shot him. The attacker later died in the hospital.

There is not a lot that can be done about knife attacks. In terms of weapon used I mean.

The MSM coverage of the California shooting is the usual expected. 2 days of blanket coverage then nothing. Maybe a small article 3/4 of the way down.

This is a strange shooting because a good guy with a gun did go in, and was shot dead. And the guy doing the shooting was a highly trained Marine vet who should have been a good guy.

No calls from the politicians for gun control, no calls from the NRA for more guns, no calls for improved mental health screening.

It just happened. Thoughts and prayers till the next one.

Meanwhile, the AR15 armed minutemen are on the border waiting for the chance to shoot the caravan.

I cant get my head around it. The total lack of willingness to introduce some sort of federal gun control. Just a simple test to own a gun for example. Similar to the driving test.

ScotsAlan:

I am sure I have told this story before. An example of UK gun control. When I lived on the Isle of Man, I knew a lot of guys who would go pheasant shooting in season. After the shoot, the shotguns would be left in the car, and the guys would be in the bar for a beer with their cartridge belts still on. Some would come in with their guns and ask the landlord to put them upstairs in his gunsafe (he was a hunter too). The shotgun was a tool to bag a pheasant or two for the pot. It was not a defensive thing. A hobby. As such, when finished with, put it away safe. A totally different attitude.

ScotsAlan:

Anyway. A good mate of mine who lived on the Isle of Man worked on a farm, and he fancied getting a shotgun to bag a few rabbits and pheasant. He applied for a license, was police inspected, got his gun safe etc, had permission from landowner to shoot on his land.. and passed all his criminal background checks. He got his shotgun license. He did not have a gun though, but when he was visting a friend in England (a licensed shot gun owner), the friend said he had a spare single barrel 410 gun my mate could have. Cool gesture, my mate was flying back home the next day, so he phoned liverpool airport, said he was licensed shotgun owner but his certificate was at home, would it be ok for him to carry a split down 410 in his hold baggage, split into seperate bags and no ammo. Airport said yes. He turned up at airport and was met my a police armed response unit and was thrown in the cells. It took the intervention of the Isle of Man chief constable to get him out. Thats how strict the UK is. And I am happy with that. My mate was ok with it too. He accepted he should have done his paperwork first.

Stiggs:

Yeah, mass shootings was a thing long before Trump was POTUS.

I think there's more to it than just the NRA though. Yeah they buy the politicians but it's not like they don't have any support from the people.

I was reading online comments yesterday and everytime someone suggested something needed to be done to fix the problem, not necessarily banning all guns but stricter background checks on gun buyers or banning the sale of assault rifles or whatever the reaction was just rage. There didn't seem to be any room at all for discussion or debate there. Kind of reminded me of the Chinese online reaction when someone accidently calls Taiwan a country.

The attitude seems to be gun control in any form, even just stricter rules about who can buy them = liberals taking my guns away from me = liberals taking my freedom.

That's deeper than just the NRA buying the lawmakers, that's more like a national culture or psyche or something.

Been a lot this week. Another one yesterday where cops shot the good guy, and the bad guy got away.

That's the thing with being the good guy with a gun.

If you're in a crowded place and shooting starts the other good guys with guns are looking for a guy with a gun to shoot at and assuming anyone else with a gun is a bad guy with a gun trying to shoot them.

Accidents are bound to happen.

One person is killed every 25 seconds in the world by traffic accidents, but people are going to keep driving.

Stiggs:

Imagine how many more road deaths there would be if there wasn't a licensing system and rules as to who could drive to ensure that mostly only people who had proved they were competent and fit to drive a vehicle were allowed behind the wheel.

Just like with cars, countries that have a similar licensing system and rules in place to control who can own firearms enjoy the same kind of results - they don't have nearly as many people who shouldn't be allowed to own a gun regularly shooting up the place.

3 years 26 weeks ago

hi2u:

Well, the US does have a licensing system and rules in place to control who can own firearms, which is more strict than driving rules. People with certain criminal histories aren't allowed to own guns, but can still drive.

did u read the stats on Mexico in the news the last few days?   damn!

(CNN)Soaring levels of drug-related violence made 2017 Mexico's most murderous year on record, according to government statistics released Sunday.

There were 25,339 homicides in Mexico last year, a 23% jump from 2016 and the highest number since at least 1997, the year the government began tracking the data. Overall, murders in Mexico had been declining in recent years, reaching a low of 15,520 in 2014. But officials say a surge in drug-related crime reversed that trend.
ok,,, math isn't my thing,,, but it's something like 69 murders every day!
and still not as bad as Brazil or Colombia!
Funny, when I was a kid we all knew Mexico was dangerous,,, had a reputation of being lawless, that even the cops were crooked,,, but we still went there anyway.  Had to watch Cock-fights and buy cheap pot and I think the older guys were paying the senoritas for some illicit activity I didn't quite understand at the time.  Funny thing is it required getting naked and then it looked like they were wrestling.  The border was a helluva place, haha.
