Q: Can the 'I'm not a criminal' check be done without going back to one‘s home country (USA)?

be done without going back to ones home country (USA)?  I'm guessing not.  Can you imagine trying to get fingerprint service done in china that would satisfy the FBI ?   Sh*t.  Gonna suck to go to the US and sit around a couple of months for that incredibly unweildy process to be completed.  Then the funny thing is it's only good for 6-months, better get a job & RP fast!  I wonder what will happen when go to renew RP the following year?

Can't your embassy do that?

Unfortunately we can't, the embassy isn't very useful

I don't understand why China makes it so difficult, it seems they really don't want foreigners here... as much as they pretend to...

To be honest, I would just consider moving to another country. The golden age of China is over... and foreigners are looked at with disdain rather than regard these days.

yeah, I agree.  I just wish I could document my interaction with the recruiters.  Generally they give me the impression they are about as sharp as a bowling ball.

I hear Kenya and some other countries in Africa or South America may make better choices. China has too much censorship, the media seems to love boosting stories about foreigners (especially in a negative light) when the foreign population is like 0.01%. Now a ton of VPNs are getting blocked.

China is GREAT to travel around (during certain times in certain places) but living permanetly in China is just a mistake.

False. All countries require the BAckground check for foreigners. China is not an expection.

@hamz... do you mean China is no exception? They didn't have background checks before... I know they have them now but that does that have to do with anything?

Hi Man

Sad but true this is the crap we all have to go through, why can't you use a non criminal record check from China? SAFEA allowed me to use it, you've been in China for years, remember Chinese companies don't know or actually check what SAFEA will and won't accept.

Next fast option is getting a state department non criminal record which will also be accepted like an FBI and it's 10x faster to get, locate a law office in your state of residents and they can handle it for on your behalf but still gotta get it authenticated by the Chinese Embassy in the U.S, use that service provider I gave you before.

If you have time for an FBI check go to your head PSB office and print out the FBI card, it's on my post for security check and they will help you. Than use UPS mail for the fastest service and get a tracking number#. Send it to a relatove6and make a letter to the FBI stating you are allowing this relative to accept your FBI record and then ask the relative to ship it to the service center that can get it authenticated for you and then UPS it back to you.

All U.S guys now use state department checks, much faster.

The FBI background check can be completed within 24 hours, if you use one of their approved channelers.  I've used it for myself and my son, who attends school abroad. Basically, you complete the application and pay the fee on the channeler's website, choose one of their 'contracted' Live Scan offices & make the appt there. Go in with your ID, they'll print off the application that you did online and scan your prints. They'll give you a hard copy and notify your channeler immediately.  You should receive your official results via email within 24 hours.  (It's also good to write down your passwords because the channeler, at least the one we used, requires 3 passwords to access your information.)

The results only remain on their website for 24 hours AFTER you access them so you should download and save otherwise you have to apply, pay and start all over again. Afterwards, they're deleted for security purposes.  Fee? $47-$50.

Be careful , a lot of people give bad info, that 24 hour check can not be used for China.

While I was living in Russia, I got my FBI criminal background check done in Moscow through the International Organization for Migration (a UN agency).  It was a bit more expensive and slower because it was a paper fingerprint card, but they had everything there even the form to get the apostille.  It took a while to get an appointment as that department didn't work every day and had some odd hours, but when I did finally get a hold of them they saw me the same day.
It might be worth checking with the IOM office in China.

I need to go thru this new visa process too for a new employer. It seems like it's more difficult for Americans to get a Z-visa than it is for other nationalities. This whole process gets progessively harder, year after year. This is, no doubt, a deliberate effort to mitigate the flow of foreigners into China, qualified or not.

They want to load schools with unqualified teachers. I've seen more and more schools shift to hiring eastern europeans and natives lacking degrees on business visas

@Quinn, what's your current situation? Renewing your RP or Changing jobs? I feel what your saying, in my view it's what I call the "Huawei" affect! Meaning Huawei has proven to be a stable cell phone and rich Chinese are choosing Huawei phones over iPhones, so it might be the same strategy, Chinese teachers might be in line to replace us native English speaking teachers slowly but surely just like Huawei is doing to iPhone. I'm seeing this trend of Chinese starting to be more loyal customers to their homemade copycat brands.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
