Q: Can i stay in a hotel without any passport if I have a new work permit card?

I don't have my passport with me because it is taken for a visa process. I have a residence permit from a local police station and  a visa application receipt.

When you handed your passport in they would have given you a paper reciept with your photo and details on it,.

That receipt can be used for travel and hotels inside China. I've done it the last two years.

Your new work permit card is useless as ID.

Thanks a lot for your answer. I got that paper receipt when I handed my passport. Some hotels just ask for a passport and I think that they are clueless about rules in China . New work card is definitely useless as an id and you can't get even train tickets with it.

Hotwater:

Hotels & airlines will let you use that piece of paper as your ID. I've travelled before in China with mine & not had a problem

Hope you tried your WP card first, without your passport. Nope... no passport... Then as last resort produce your PSB receipt.

Very interested in this.

You may be the first to test it.

Hello,

The PSB receipt is absolutely accepted by any hotel in China who can receive foreigners.

However, from my personal experience,  some small cities  tend to not know exactly how to handle this receipt and may simply refuse you. If you encounter this situation, you have to go to the nearest police station, show them the receipt and they will call an hotel directly for you to make the booking.

Golder rule: always have a printed version of your passport front page in color.

The answer is supposed to be 'yes', but as said above, you're going to find a lot that will say 'no' (for a host of reasons, ignorance being one... laziness close behind).

As for the ABC card not being ID... how stupid... the FEC (and equivalent) was supposed to be a legal form of ID in this country, and now they've taken that away.... stupid!

ScotsAlan:

The ABC card is different. It has a QR code on it that allows anyone with wechat to access all your data. Passport scans... everything.

The official PSB receipt should be accepted in lieu of your passport provided it has your photograph and is stamped by the PSB. Whether it is actually accepted is another matter. I have had no problems with planes and trains but one hotel actually called the police on me as they thought I did not have a passport. Luckily the policemen that attended were clued up and explained to the hotel what it is and actually did the filling in of computer information for the hotel. I also make sure it is together with a copy of my passport and previous resident permit and visa.

The new work permit card is not accepted as ID, so don't even bother yourself trying.

The QR code on it when scanned simply brings up a picture of you and your basic information in Chinese saying where you work, job, and it's expiry date. It does not give access to passport scans or anything like that. It is not magnetic in the same way Chinese ID cards are and does not scan like they do.

Previously the FEC books said they are ours to keep, the new cards have no mention of it and so the majority of employers are now hanging on to them.

Also a new style that might work as a backup. My company kept my card, but I scanned the card with wechat first and saved my WP info to my wechat Favorites, than I'll try someday as a test to show them that info if need be. Ive only been asked once in China to see my passport in public in 9 years and that was at a subway station.

ScotsAlan:

The card is yours to carry, owned by the Government.. The company has no right to keep it. You need it on you at all times.

That is the law.

Honestly dude. If a company holds a single document that you are required to have on your person, then that is classified as human trafficing under law.

The card belongs to the Chinese Government, and they issued it to you. Not to your company. Get it back off them. Give them a copy, not the original.
