I cannot speak for myself as I am not a student, I am however a Foreign teacher and father of a young daughter. My wife and I have decided to leave China in 10 years time because we don't believe the high school system in China is good enough, respected enough or teaches thought enough for our daughter to get the best out of her education.
What the Chinese system does do well is instill a good work ethic, (although 7am to 9pm is in my opinion overdoing even that), and so we will put our daughter through the Chinese Middle school system to teach her this aspect.
What does China need to do to improve?
1. Eradicate the widespread culture of teaching and guanxi. The best students should ALWAYS be the most intelligent not those with the richest / most powerful parents.
2. Teach thought, not just fact, why did this happen, what would happen if, type scenarios.
3. Creative thinking, logical thinking.
4. Employ genuinely qualified teachers, not just qualified in their field of expertise, but qualified in TEACHING itself.
Simply put, education should teach you HOW to think not WHAT to think.
