Just don't get China

Just sounding and/vox pop.

I have been in China for nearly 3 years teaching at a private University. Apart from the usual daily activities I have never 'travelled' in China other than a visit to two local cities two years ago.

I just don't get it here. When people talk about visiting Bejing or Shanghai it leaves me disinterested and unmotivated to visit there. I constantly rack my brains about exploring certain aspects of Chinese culture and nothing comes up on the radar. For example, people keep telling me to visit the Great Wall, however a shrug of my shoulders usually registers my indifference.

(Don't get me wrong I have internalised all the common complaints about China and I barely notice them any more. In other words I can do China on a day to day basis.)

Should I regret this perspective on China in later years or is indifference quite common amongst expats?

You can't really judge things by word of mouth until you actually experience it yourself first. You should go take a look at the Great wall and visit places like Beijing and Shanghai and then have an opinion based on that.
