A mechanic from rural China has spent

$9200 building a replica Lamborghini using parts from a second-hand Nissan and sheets of welded iron to mimic the supercar's sleek exterior.

Wang Jian, a 28-year-old man from China's eastern Jiangsu province, started building his copy of the Lamborghini Reventon, which retails for $1.5 million, in May last year, UK newspaper the Telegraph reports.

The Italian car manufacturer reportedly made only 21 models worldwide of the Reventon in 2007, which features a carbon fibre exterior and V12 engine.

But Jian did not let this put him off, using the engine from a Nissan van, the chassis from a Volkswagen and welding the iconic body himself using sheets of iron.

The replica lacks headlights, a windscreen, windows and many interior parts such as a dashboard but from the outside it looks remarkably similar to the original.

It is also impressively fast, with local media reporting it had a top speed of more than 250km/h.

Born to a humble farming family and training as a mechanic at 16, Jian said he had always loved sports cars.

"After growing up, I thought of making my own, when I had the circumstances in life and the knowledge," he said.

"When I had the right circumstances and the time, I assembled it myself and realised my dream," he said.
