Q: Don't be an idiot.

This is not a question but a request. A couple of teachers and students were arrested the other day for taking drugs. Please remember that you are a guest in this country. When you mess up then everybody suffers. Some of us actually live in China and have done so very peacefully for many years. A lot of foreigners come here and turn into little casanovas. They screw everything that moves and leave a string of very suicidal girls behind when they leave. Some turn into alcoholics. They even go to class intoxicated. You make the rest of us look like idiots. I can't understand why someone would come to China and do drugs. You know that they have a death penalty and are not scared to enforce it. I love meeting people from all over the world and from all walks of life. All I'm trying to say here is, don't be an idiot and make it harder for everyone else that is going to come to China in the future.

I don't know why this was making the rounds on the news and everyone was talking about it. I think because it had to do with EF "English first".  This happens every day here. Especially in Guangzhou. They do raids on foreign bars all the time here and make people do piss test on the spot. It's not something new or rare. That's why I don't know why this was so amped up.

And you preaching to people not to do this or that won't help anything. People are going to do what they do no matter what. That's on them. Its also because teaching English is not a very prestigious job. Any English speaking fool or none English person for that matter can do it. So your not going to get the best of the best coming here to work when the bar is set so very low and demand is so very high. That just asking to get low-end people. That's just something good teachers are going to have to deal with.  Until china on hires real teachers to be teachers...not some ex KFC employees from America.

Quinn68:

Isn't always ex-KFC employees. Some are ex-Taco Bell. Seriously, I've worked with quite a few Ivy League graduates, state-certified teachers and highly qualified administrators in China. A lot of them had the same issues that plague the motley assortment of low caliber "teachers" you see everywhere - alcoholism, personality disorders, criminal backgrounds, and broken moral compasses. And, yeah, the old claim that foreigners couldn't make it in their own country so they came to China to teach does, in fact, hold true in many of these cases. Be that as it may, there are a group of highly competent professional veteran teachers within the particular types of programs that I've been involved with over the years who are here long-term and and have established themselves as upstanding members of the teaching community.

@quinn. I agree there are a few people I met that are true teaching professionals who just love china and decided to take their skills to this country....but they are far and few between.

A friend of mine had the whole system played. Well...a guy I know..more of an acquaintance. This guy was just like your regular so-called " garbage foreigner" who drank a lot and fucked every wet hole he could find and pretty much hated the local population and acted like a wild animal outside of work....but was the headmaster at an international school.  How did he do it? He just dressed for the part and acted like he knew what he was doing. He was not a stupid guy, far from it. Kind of reminded me of that "sham wow" guy from those commercials. He dressed very professional and spoke professional at work but admitted he had no clue what he was doing to me, maybe he was just being modest, but I don't think...I could see how he really was. He said he just kind of went with the flow and used his peronality to keep his job. And it worked. He was your average low-end training school kindergarten teacher...but just acted like he was a CEO of a Fortune 500 company when he was at work. And people bought it. Plus he could speak Chinese quite well...this was also a key to his success.

I think "dress for the job you want" is more helpful than a lot of people think. I do this from time to time. And you will notice a huge difference in how you are perceived and treated by strangers.

China can't hire real teachers until they start paying real salaries. Trust me I have done recruiting for many years. No real teacher is going to come here for 20k RMB with a small accommodation. If they want real teachers from the US or Europe to come here they have to pay salaries at least 20% higher than what these teachers would get in their home country. Neither the government public schools nor the privately owned schools and training centers are willing to pay even remotely that much for teachers, and therefore things won't change.

Another classic case of the need for China to be seen to do something, and be able to point at 'bad' foreigners. Also it seemed to be a tip off job, so likely their dealer put in a favour to be ignored. Report on foreigners and we'll ignore the fact that you sold them whatever they took. I don't think it's helpful to preach, people are their own people, do what they want. If you're clean, legal, and good, why worry about some back-packers.

As for teaching English not being prestigious, well they get what they pay for. A good teacher can earn as much, if not more, than a teacher back home. In another blog someone mentioned how cheap the Chinese are. They won't pay for actual teachers, they just pay for travellers. Those of us building careers can make pretty good money, and every time some others get thrown out of China our value increases.

Netizens calll for stricter checks on foreign teachers? Well how about they start realising that if the school principle is driving a Rolls, the teacher will be under paid? Again, you get what you pay for. Also they don't realise just how 'strict' the laws are for Foreigners Work Permits, hence why so many companies hire illegally, because it's too damn difficult to hire legally. When schools have to basically skirt the law because they wouldn't have ANY teachers if they only followed the law, then what can be expected?

Just worry about ypourself, and ensure you're legal and good. Schools and Students should know how good you are. If they don't think you're worth it, then that's their problem and they'll just be left with transient KFC rejects who just wnat a working vacation with booze, broads, and blunts.

biggj123:

Some English teaching jobs are good and well respected, but most are not. Most are these fly by night training centers that will hire anyone foreign even if they can't speak English. And you can make pretty good money doing it especially compared to the cost of living. One of the reasons it's so high paying is because it's for-profit teaching and there are not many people who are willing to come to china to do it.

China is not for everyone though. It's too strange in certain aspects for most people.  So if you are native English speaking from one of the native speaking countries and you are white and willing to teach in china...fuck, the sky's the limit. And that's because there are not a lot of those people in China compared to the Chinese people and the jobs available. And the rules on work permits stops a lot of decent people too from coming here since they don't want to break the law if they don't have a degree. And the ones who do come and work illegally probably have no problem in breaking other laws like doing drugs etc.

Around 2 years ago one of my Chinese friends was opening a school in Hangzhou. And he wanted me to help him find 3 teachers for his school. The guys a local official and had no problem getting everything legal. The school was legit. There wasn't any funny stuff with work permits or anything. So he did me a few favors before so it was my turn to help him out. So I posted his job all around the popular job sites. Over the course of about 2 weeks, I got around 75-100 emails/resumes back. And out of them only 10-15 were native English speakers and out of those 10-15, only about 5 had a degree. There was not one person who was an actual teacher of any kind. Most resumes where from Arab or Eastern Euro countries or african...a few south American countries... While doing this I realized how hard it was for an English school to find qualified people.  So I was talking to 3 of the native English people online and discussing the job and they all said they had other offers and would get back to me if they decided to take this job. And none of them did. The job paid 25k a month with all the free perks. So I think that was pretty good for just some training center.  So anyway I started using some agents to send me some teaching intro videos to see what they had...those were just as shitty if not more shitty. Broken English, bad grammar, nonnative. So after about a month, I got in contact with this American girl who was living in Hangzhou already and wanted to switch job, she had all her shit in order and seemed pretty good. And she decided to take the job. So I found him 1 teacher after looking at around 200 people in total. The guy ended up hiring 2 other nonnatives with high education and good accents through some agent. Anyway, just an interesting story. I thought it would be easy. It was far from it.

At least not easy to find quality.

Point taken on the difficulty of finding qualified teachers here. Full disclosure - I own a school. Fully legal and registered. Finding qualified teachers just got even more difficult, as my province has decided that ONLY Native English speakers can be ESL teachers, stopping the non-native English Unversity, or non-native many years experience from getting Foreigners Work Permits. It sucks. I've found a number of non-native speakers who are actually GREAT teachers, but they're having to leave if they try to switch jobs.

On top of that, too many schools and training centes fuck with the teachers Work Permits, making it impossible for them to change jobs. They've done it to themselves, made it so difficult for foreigners to work legally, they've been left with those who will work illegally. Teachers are leaving in floods, the whole market stinks with corruption and legal avoidance. I get visited by the local education bureau at least once a month, yet there are a dozen unlicensed schools in my area, and the other licensed schools have all employed Eastern Europeans, Africans, and South Asians on 'marketing manager' Work Permits.

I'm probably the only school in my area that is fully compliant with the letter of the law, and it's bloody difficult to keep doing so. We just want to sell up, sell out, and leave, cause replacing teachers is just far, far, too difficult.

I get where you're coming from Monkey but sadly, you'll probably have to resign yourself to the fact that foreigners aren't going to stop doing stupid shit in China. Or anywhere.

And everytime it happens local dumb fu*ks will start going on about how 'those foreigners come here and have no respect, they don't try to fit in, they bring their barbaric foreign ways here and want to change our lifestyle and steal our jobs and woman and they can't speak (insert local language here) and... etc. Look there's one now, he must be a criminal drug addict rapist terrorist here to spread HIV and steal the job of some poor, hard working local and sell crack to kindergarten kids, spy for his government and probably blow something up".

Everytime (well maybe not everytime but often enough) some random foreigner does something stupid and the media picks it up and turns it into a circus the other, normal foreigners cringe and say FFS, can people please stop being idiots / rapists / pedos / drug dealers / drunk idiots / thieves or whatever but the wankers who do it don't care, they'll keep doing their thing.

I think China is just like anywhere else though. There will always be someone who embarrasses the local foreign community, there will always be the idiot redneck types who jump on that and use it to hate on everyone foreign and there will always be the silent, rational people who say 'well that guy on the news is a dick but that foreign guy who teaches my kids, or lives next door, or owns that business I go to all the time, or who I see in the restaurant and supermarket is a nice guy so I won't judge them all from that one example on the news.

And that's probably the only way you can really do anything about it. Be the good ambassador and if you see someone you work with stepping out of line have a quiet word with him / her explaining how it isn't ok and why.

biggj123:

You know, from my experience china has more tame foreigners compared to a lot of places I've been, especially in Asia.  Well, there is Thailand...that is its own world...china does not even hold a candle to that shit pool of foreigners. The Philippines has some crazy ass foreigners too. I noticed a lot of ex-US military retirees there. Korea and Japan not so bad since you get more of a "high class" crowd that goes there since it cost more. I went to Vietnam but I never saw any foreigners there. at least no white or black people.

As for china...well, the foreigners I come in contact with are mostly want-to-be english teachers in their 20's who want to travel. Older married men with Chinese wives and by older I mean 30 40 50's. And the backpacker types who stay for a year and teach to get some money to move on to the next place.  I have a few business owner friends from Canada but only 2. though most come here to teach. Its good for most people, the pay is decent, lots of perks, low hours compared to most jobs. The biggest thing is the visa for every foreigner I meet. Except for the married guys. That visa is pretty good if you don't have to work.

Real story ...

Four Britons held in China, two days after drugs bust

Four Britons have been arrested in an eastern China province, the British embassy said Friday, two days after Chinese police announced a drug bust there involving 16 foreigners.

Police in the city of Xuzhou in Jiangsu province said on Wednesday that a total of 19 people were arrested in a drugs case centring on a local branch of a language school.

Those arrested included seven foreign teachers and nine foreign students, police said.

China Arrests Another Canadian National As Feud With Ottawa Intensifies

Mon, 07/15/2019 - 19:10

In the latest indication that President Trump's 'truce' with President Xi jinping was merely a hallow stalling tactic developed to usher in a brief reprieve for global market - after all, it becalmed investors swiftly sent US markets to new high all time high over 3,000 - it appears Beijing is reigniting its feud with Canada, a country that has been caught in the crossfire beetwen the word's two largest economies

According to the CBC, citing Global Affairs Canada, a Canadian citizen has been detained in Yantai along with a group of Chinese nationals and foreigners accused of running a drug ring.  China, where Canadian diplomatic officials have been allowed to meet with him.

China refused to release any other details about the detention, but this latest arrest happened around the same time that Chinese police detained several foreign students and teachers on drug-related charges in the eastern Chinese city of Xuzhou. At least four are Britons.

So far, Global Affairs has refused to comment on whether the arrest of the Canadian is related to the detention by Chinese police of seven foreign teachers and nine foreign students on drug allegations. Xinhua said three Chinese nationals were also detained.

Some of those arrested were teachers believed to work at the Education First language school in Yantai. The school expressed regret for a drug-related incident and said it is co-operating with authorities.

The school said in a statement on social media that classes have not been affected at its four English-language centers in Xuzhou.

Education First, a privately held Swiss firm that operates in 114 countries, pledged to improve the management and supervision of its foreign teachers to make sure they understand and obey Chinese laws.

Relations between Ottawa and Beijing have crumbled since Canadian police arrested Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou after she landed at the Vancouver airport. In response, Beijing arrested a former Canadian diplomat and a business man who led guided tours of North Korea for thrill-seeking tourists. Both men have been charged with espionage.

Also, late last year, A Chinese court reopened the case of a Canadian national who had been convicted of drug deal and sentenced to hard labor. Instead, that individual might now face the death penalty.

And let's not forget about the 'harrassment' that an American executive received at the hands of the Chinese government last month, when a Chinese-American executive at Koch Industries was held and questioned for several days. The State Department has issued a warning about China’s "exit bans" against dual-national citizens.
