Q: 100+ Recently stabbed by Xinjiang separatists. Why bother with China?

Neither Communism nor Islam is known for its ability to compromise in ideological conflicts. This is going to get worse.

Because the Uyghurs are a culturally unified ethnic minority (like Tibetans previously were), they are subject to suppression from the Chinese military and police.
A story from last year about the Uyghur vs police violence in Xinjiang mentioned that police had forbidden the men from having long beards - i.e. the Islamic style. Police were also frequently raiding houses in Xinjiang, under the pretext of countering terrorism.
This is very much about the CCP trying to wipe out separatism. It doesn't want any group of Chinese people to have a governing ideology other than Communism.
Uyghur people are mostly Muslims, and Islam is a religion that condones violent reprisals. It would seem to me that there is now some organised dissent (just as there was between the CCP and the spiritual authority in Tibet - but Tibetan Buddhism was a non-violent religion...).

I don't buy the whole "religious oppression" story. China has no problem with Muslims, Xinjiangren or otherwise, who commingle in a secular society. Im sure it is doing all sorts of scummy things out west, but there are proper 21st century ways to respond to that. Mutilating a bunch of "infidels" is not.

Meh, read news about crime statistics, large availability of firearms and the occasional shootings (how much victims already ? 100+ ?), the growing (and already huuuuge) inequalities, lack of wealth redistribution, or questionable education choices (creationism taught in schools, this kind of Bible-tumping non-sense). Why bother with USA ?
I'm being provocative, but honestly, as much as I don't put much confidence in China for my kids future and my own safety (awful pollution, education system, growing social problems, and incoming economic & demographic issues), I would not hope much more from USA, due to what I mention above. There are other emigration destination whith less issues. And California is overcrowded anyway, while Oregon wouldn't do well for my hay fever ^^

Allowing to teach creationism in some states just baffles me. To me, it's like teaching that 2 + 2 can equals 5, because a lobby decided it was fine, freedom of expression and all that. So when my kids to my school, I would always worry what kind of shenanigans they would here teachers. Of course, this risk exist anywhere, but the power of Christian lobbies in USA scare the heck of me ^^
To be completely honest, I don't really want to live in China anymore but I also don't want to live in America. Perhaps some sort of middle ground would suit me just right.

I see a few folks don't want to live in the U.S. That's fine... go where you and your family can be safe and happy. I'm not blindly patriotic, I won't accuse you of being a traitor or anything like that... just go where you and your family can be safe and happy, and where you stand the best chance of making a good life for yourselves. China ain't it.

Well, I hope I wouldn't be labeled a traitor since I am Canadian, haha. But honestly, I don't really want to move back to Canada either... cold winters... kind of boring.
The more I go to places unknown, the more I learn. I know too much about China now. And if someone pressured me to come up with a pros/cons list of China... it would be around 30% pro and 70% con... (and that's being generous).
Strangely, if you only visit China and DO NOT live here then it changes dramatically to like 80% pro and 20% con, because you know you are always on your way out soon enough.

Hey, USA have some really neat places, and have a lot going for it :) I've found memories of an internship I did in Boston, my only time in USA was a *great*, totally loved it. For instance, you find active communities who care about building a nice town with a place for everyone. There is a great melting pot, which is something I love. You can still defend your rights and win, you have some awesome education institutes, you can matter and change things in USA without fearing for your future and your familly. I used to take this for granted, I don't anymore, thanks to my experience of life in China... But there are much better argument than the one you push in the title ;)

Canada has hockey which was 50% of my reason for moving there for two years (grad school was awesome!) A need for a warmer clime is solved by going to south America. I prepared for said eventuality by learning Spanish (gf is too), after Chinese it's not that bad!
I'm gonna play devil's advocate. Even with this incident, China is still a safe country and will get safer. This horrible incident will only lead to beefed up security. Security is one of the things China does so well.
If I go back to the states, I would go back to a govt that makes it difficult for law abiding citizens to carry guns but they allow criminals to arm themselves to the teeth. And now this Ukraine thing is threatening to led to a major war (I hope Obama understands that this is not our business). America is a country slowly going in the wrong direction politically and Americans continue to sleep in a bed of ignorance.

If I may put some nuance about safety in China, I'd simply like to remind you that most of us here are white males living in developed areas of relatively large cities.
Security wise, you can't beat that and its highly unlikely a robbery would ever target you for a number of reasons.
Single Chinese ladies wouldn't feel so safe moving around alone at night and even at days sometimes. Same goes for the poorer areas, where police isn't likely to bother as much.

Actually, it IS America's 'business'. They signed an agreement with Ukraine, guaranteeing it's protection, when it became a sovereign nation, and when it gave up its nukes.
Normally I don't support US intervention, but in this case, it does have a treaty it needs to honour!

China is still the safest place, I think , at least u dont have to border about some moron shooting your kid at school, here u can avoid the places that aren't safe but in the US , shooting is random, unpredicted even your neighbor can shoot at u claiming he's standing his grounds.

Why is it always 'Xinjiang separatists' when anything malevolent happens in China? There are plenty of other groups that like to do harm.

It doesn't matter, where I watch Stewart from. He cracks me up, anytime he opens his mouth. I used to laugh at J.Leno, but Stewart is my favorite among all teli 'talkers'.
talking to a friend here, it was interesting to note that the men responsible for the attacks were immediatley identified as 'Xinjiang terrorists' before anything more was known about the incident.

Three killed, another injured, in latest Chinese knife attack
Three people were stabbed to death and another injured Friday morning at a market in the capital of Hunan Province in central China. Local media report that several Uighur “naan peddlers” suddenly went on a knifing rampage.
Early Friday morning it wasn’t clear whether the attack was an act or terror. The South China Morning Post reported that the assailants owned a local baked naan shop, and at 10 a.m. a dispute they had with several local residents quickly escalated into violence.

It wasn't classified as terrorist attack. 'Naan guy' stabbed three, and get 'extinguished' by police a bit later. Dispute between merchants, teli said.
