Q: With 1.3 million Chinese living in Canada, and under 3,000 Canadians living in China....

Anyone else find it hilarious that anyone could accuse a Canadian of being a "colonialist" in China?

Actually anything is plausible these days.  It's a leftover, I think, from the 19th Century.  I mean, truly, are the English Canadians not guilty of colonialism in Quebec?  They severely repressed that province for nearly 150 years until Reve Levesque showed up.  So, yes, I hate to say but colonialist is an inbred state of mind that presupposes that one's own culture, religion and mores are superior to those of another culture or of another people.

kchur:

Are the Quebecois not guilty of colonizing the Iroquois and about fifty other tribes? Are the Iroquois not guilty of colonizing the Hurron? Did the Huron, in better days, not trample the smaller Iroquoian tribes? Etc. etc. etc. Fortunately, the only sinless nationality is the Han Chinese, which exists in a perpetual friendly state of mutual cooperation with its enthusiastically happy minority groups. It is even said that they are the only peoples of this earth born without the original sin, washed of that nation by the lord himself, when he realized how impressed he was with their five thousand year history.

kchur:

Oh, yes, and I thought I might add, that British Columbia (where most of the Canadian posters here are from) was settled separately and administered separately from the rest of Canada (via India, not via the Atlantic), and completely cut off from and separated from eastern Canada until the early twentieth century. A part of our heritage.

nevermind:

A colonial war is a colonial war. To the victor go the spoils. You can't say the british colonized Quebec when Quebec was colonizing it themselves. As well, they were twice given votes to leave that failed.  Besides, I was talking about China, as was fairly clear Stay on topic.

It's OK as long its the Chinese complaining about everyone else, but it's completely and totally unacceptable if others complain about things in or about China.  If you look up hypocracy in the dictionary you will see a picture of China or of the kool-aid drinking expats.
Sometimes people have to invent crap to complain about (ie....Quebec....which by the way made me laugh quite hard...I needed that...tabernac!!).

I haven't seen huge areas of China with only Canadian expats, setting up Canadian business, schools...etc that serve Canadian exclusively whilst trying to get their hands on China's resources. Which sounds more like a colonization to you? Cause that/s how the Chinese behave in Canada.

I  think this happens to Africa often. But, Africa is not called colony. colony is like Hongkong(used to be) and Macao. sovereignty did not belong to china. Now they come back and belong to China.

I think China buy resources not only from Canada but also from Australia, middle east.  China develops very fast and need more resources (even though China has very backwards technology to contruct the country, waste a lot rescource compared to developed countries)

thedude:

OK true. But China exploits Africa much the same way that the west did (or still does) in the past. Going on about past colonialism and at the same time doing the same thing in Africa is hypocracy. At least in Canada we keep them on a short leash and don't let them exploit us....so it's win win on both sides.

I think in the same way when it comes to help with Africa. China is on good terms with Africa, at the same time, propoganda our culture and buy rescources.
