Q: 15 minute demo, need some tips please?
Hi all,
I have an interview tomorrow for a part time teaching job. The students are aged 5 to 6. Anyone got any tips on what to do? I've never done a demo before.
They don't have text books. I have my own set of animal flash cards I used in my previous teaching job.
Thanks in advance.

Play a game with the flashcards...more than likely the people interviewing you will act like the 5 to 6 year olds...so here is a simple game. The animals have certain colors. Yes. Make sure you have some color flash cards available. Hide the animals behind the colored flash card and ask them which animal is for instance yellow. Have them guess. It's a guessing game. When they say Giraffe let's suppose that's the yellow animal you have behind the colored card you take it out and act surprised....
They can name all yellow animals that they can think of like lions, birds, etc., until they get to giraffe. You can do this game for the duration of the 15 minutes or you can go on and play another game that you know of...this is a good warm up to get them to talk.
I have a question for you: if you have no clue how to do a demo class for 15 minutes, how would you plan to teach a lesson that's 45 minutes or longer? For Chrissakes people, if you aren't a teacher, then please just don't teach!
im with you.. sino
if you need help to fill 15 then you really need to go into a different field.
use the 15 minutes to tell them that they are fools for considering you
Aw, be nice people! She did say she had flash cards from a previous teaching job. She probably just wants to impress her potential employer.
This is China. Forget anything about actually teaching them anything useful; you'll get fired if you do. Instead, behave like an insanely-happy monkey-clown and pronounce random words in a cute way.
If you don't get the job, you can come back and tell everyone that Hulk got you fired. You can slander my name all across the internet. Just do this for 15 minutes, and you'll get a raise. You'll probably have a kid watching, so just go out of your way to make that kid laugh.
Hulk:
Updated. Sorry, didn't know you were a girl. On the internet, women are men until proven otherwise... or something.
You're simply wasting everybody's time. You'll be on here in a weeks time complaining about being discriminated against just because you tried to cheat everybody.
Rin:
Will I? I don't think so, I just wanted some friendly advice. Thanks anyway.
For some reason I can't comment on your answers guys.
Wow, feel the love!
@ Sino. I have been teaching in China for three years with no complaints. I have never done a demo however. Also they told me the demo wouldn't be in front of kids, it would be in front of teachers. Thanks for your useless advice anyway.
@Crimo See above.
sam239:
Methinks sino and crimo jumped the gun on this one, in fact you asked the question, it's well-worded/etc., so it deserves a better answer than that. I've never done a demo so I have no clue.
Hulk:
You'll have to forgive them. We get a lot of wumaos here, and it's easy to be on the defensive... heck, I've been guilty of it too.
crimochina:
demo class = class? you've been teaching for 3 years and can't do a class? my first interview i did an on the spot demo with no forewarning.
