Q: 5 year rule? Not in Shenzhen.
Just to help spread the word about that 5 year rule junk. I got my passport back today, this is my 6th resident permit in a row, with the same company. So while other Provinces are using the 5 year rule that requires you to leave China, Guangdong isn't using it, hopefully never does. I didn't require anything new. It was the same as last July, just had to wait those stupid 3 weeks to get my passport back.
Its party time..Safe with my family again for another year.

.... for a moment there I thought "5 year rule" was some Chinese rule about how long time, from the time you drop a piece of food, until it is no longer considered eatable.
Thumbs up for the visa info. I believe all of Guangdong is pretty uniform when it comes to visa rules.

Not all of Guangdong is consistent with some of the visa issues. Together with 3 other British colleagues I've got a 3 year residence visa to match my 3 year contract/work permit. Friend of mine in Zhongshan tried to get one valid for longer than a year when I told him this. Response from ZS RP office was something like "no, we can't do that here, we're different to GZ"!

Agree with Hotwater, some cities in GD are much more "opened" than others when it comes to foreigners staying indefinitely.
Is that true anywhere? The 5 year rule?

This is true for Sichuan and Shandong province, it's being tested around there according to my gov friend. And some foreigners have posted reports that they were told to leave.

Thats kind of stupid. There would be a million ways to skirt that issue. I cant see that making anyone leave china who was determined to stay. Oh well, im glad it didnt effect you anyways.
I have heard this rule bantered about on this site. I would like to know how long you are supposed to leave China before you return?
most of the schools have cooperation agreements here in shandong so they move your visa to another schools name for a year and and write a contract loaning the teacher to the other school in case of inspection and you really continue teaching where you are, the other school returns the favor for the their teachers as well, then you start your 5 year clock all over again, people always find a way around the rules.
