Q: Is 5000 rmb sufficient in Hubei?

I was offered a job this morning by a UK based recruiting company with offices in China. They sent me the contract and it's with a middle high school in Hubei Province at 5000 RMB a month. This includes accommodation and all utilities for 22 hours a week. Does anyone have any experience working in this province? I like to live very frugally and save as much money as possible every month. Will 5000 RMB sufficient?

It is, but don't accept an offer that low unless it's a college. Even still, I'd demand at least 6k. Most high schools were offering me 10-15k and I'm a deaf native speaker (I had to work really damn hard to prove myself, though). I recommend at least 7k in smaller cities.

If it's in Wuhan, do yourself a favor and don't go there. Go elsewhere. Hubei is a great province, but Wuhan is filled with THE WALKING DEAD. The zombie apocalypse dwells in Wuhan... do not go there.

It would help if you can tell us which city your offer is in. I've been all over Hubei and would be more than happy to give you some tips.

I lived in Jiangsu (fancy, rich, etc...) with 5000 RMB + paid accommodation, and could save more than half of it (eating local, living frugal). Winter or summer, no air-con, just more clothes. I would except Hubei to have cheaper food than Jiangsu.

Rin:

Wow! No AC in summer. I would die.

5000 is fine for living but why should you take such a low payment? Either they have to reduce the hours to like 16-18h or they have to raise the salary to at least 8000

everything else is not reasonable

I lived in Hebei province on a salary of 5000 for 16 classes a week. I need AC in summer and the weekly electric was pretty expensive. Heating in winter was paid by school. The Chinese food in smaller cities can get pretty boring so you may need a Western fix now and again.

If you are 'qualified'. (Native speaker, degree in any subject) then I would suggest trying elsewhere. Here in Kunming base salary is at least 8000 a month with housing, utilities and travel fees covered and cost of living is still fairly low. Shanghai/Beijing etc will offer considerably more but cost of living is higher.

Good luck!

DrMonkey:

Kunming beats Shanghai/Beijing anytime, in my book ^^ Yunnan province is awesome to explore, and Kunming is really, really great (climate, cultural mix, mood). So with a decent pay like you mention, sounds really great :)

Other than being able to buy drugs on every street corner, Kunming, and Yunnan province in general, is freaking awesome.

If I was you mate I would knock this one on the head. You should be on at least a few thousand more.

However it you are interested in this you should be able to save around 4000 a month living tightly with all utilities paid for. Good luck

Wow!!!!! I couldn't imagine it. Why do people come to China for such low pay. Surely if you are qualified you can get lousy pay in your home country.

i'm sure you can get by on that, but why would you accept that?  i'm fairly convinced you are being cheated out of the money somehow.  please don't use a recruiter to find a job.  there is nothing a recruiter can do for you that you cannot do for yourself.
