Q: Is 7,000 RMB a good salary for living in Chengdu?

I am foreign, so...is 7.000 RMB a good salary, to ask, as salary expectation, at Chengdu? I mean for living...is it a reasonable salary? I don't want to be rich, and just to live for some months...

It depends on what you are going to be doing. ESL Teachers in public primary schools in Chengdu are on average of 4-6k rmb.

I'd want 60,000 a month , because I can spend that much easily.. I don't know how you can survive on that amount. I just figured 2 meals out for two and a couple of drinks in the evening to be 350y or 10700 a month.

I'm making 9000rmb a month and have a 2000rmb a month housing allowance. If they aren't helping you with rent then you're getting screwed.

Just put it this way it could be better than some people that are making a lot less. It doesn't matter how much you make if you can take what you make and make it grow even bigger than yes it is a good salary....

I'd make sure that decent quality housing is included. If it is, then you should be absolutely fine.

With that said, you won't actually save much of that if you spend much time in expat bars or eat western often; on that salary if you want to save, you'll have to live local.

7,000 is great, 6,000 is good, 5,000 is workable. If you aren't looking to save a lot of money, something in the range of 4,500-6,500 is fine for Chengdu. In my opinion, money < free time. Those (english teachers) pulling in 8,000+ are working 30-40 hours a week. I make only around 6,000-7,000 without housing, but work around 15 hours a week. I can't teach more than a few hours a day without going crazy.

Depends how you live and what the job is.  you can live anywhere in China on 7000, so long as you're not in the bar EVERY night.  I would imagine house prices are cheaper there too so I reckon its fine.  Just depends what job you're doing, and the hours etc

Just throwing in some more numbers. Average cost of housing for decent apartment if living by yourself is 1500-2000. Spending 750 a week, or roughly 107 per day (which is really quite high for Chengdu, unless you do a lot of shopping), puts you at around 3,000 a month for food/entertainment/miscellaneous. Leaving you with at least 2,000 saved a month. Again, you won't have much saved, but if you aren't focused on making money 7,000 (even without housing) is very very good for Chengdu. Throw in the random bonuses, travel allowance and other part-time work, and you'll have more than enough to enjoy the high-life.

A:Going to HK would be the best bet I reckon, especially if you were looking for a church wedding. Chinese weddings are pretty grim IMO - you go to a barren govt dept with souless officials and navigate red tape so some guy can give you a red stamp and a marriage book. You get expensive pictures taken of you both posing in places you'd never go to in everyday life that is somehow supposed to represent your wedding, then a while later it's off to a restaurant where a game show host kind of guy makes sure it's as tacky as possible while the guests eat as fast as they can so they can leave as soon as they finish eating and gave you money. Hell, I'd go to Thailand or the Philippines and get married in Paradise.   -- Stiggs
