Q: Is 798 still *the* underground art scene in Beijing?

I heard a rumor a while back that as 798 has become more popular/mainstream that a bunch of local artists have started to form a new underground art scene somewhere further outside the city.

Has anyone heard anything about this?

There's nothing underground about 798 these days. I went not so long ago, and quite frankly, I was happy when I was out of there. Why? People were snapping pics of everything and everyone from all angles. I couldn't walk without stepping into the frame of someone's pics. And they all looked like stupid domestic tourists, not art enthusiasts. The people go to see the architecture, not the art. Most of the galleries were quite empty which further convinced me of this. Oh and the wedding photographers...don't even get me started.

The "new" place which has been around for a few years already is Caochangdi, but maybe there's an even more underground place that I haven't heard of yet.
