Q: Absinthe readily available here - ever surprised you?

I'm pretty sure it's banned in the UK, don't know where else but I remember having friends who would always have to pop over to Europe to get it. It seems ubiquitous here though, and at 70%+ I'm surprised it hasn't been banned here especially considered the habits of some locals to get a bt out of control with their drinking.

I don't think its banned in the UK.  It certainly is available there.  It can be bought in the United States too.  Why is this news?

Harpo:

While absinthe isn't banned in the usa, its illegal for it to contain its key component thujone or grande wormwood. So its basically not real absinthe. Id be interested in knowing if China has the real deal.

Can you buy the "real" stuff in any country these days? I guess it wouldn't surprise me if it were possible to buy real here though. But knowing China, the sellers would probably charge double for it.

It's banned pretty much everywhere in Europe, and used to be banned in France, but not anymore.

But yeah, it's available in China, but Chinese people don't drink it, or simply don't know about it in general.

They can't even stand the strong anise taste in Pastis and Ricard, so I doubt they'd like it.

I was surprised, though, because when I found out they had it, the ban was still in place in France. Yay?

Mr_spoon:

Oh I'm sorry, I forgot to mention: It's apparently fake (because, you know, China), since it gets you less drunk than whiskey.

Absinthe is legal in the UK and the European Union, but only up to a maximum thujone level. The reason why Absinthe has been banned in the past is not because the alcohol, but because the thujone that it contains is supposed to be a psychoactive substance.

Nowadays, most of the absinthe sold around the world is either thujone-free or has the amount limited.  The absinthe sold in China is either fake or contains a low level of thujone, no reason why it should be banned

Is that the one they would heat it up and pour it over a sugar-cube?  or something like that. ...   Popular 19th, and early 20th century in France I believe,, gets folks stoned out of their gourd ?  and wasn't there a problem w/ addiction or at least the imbibers were soooo stoned most of the time they looked like addicts ?

sorry, toooo lazy to google right now.   i love to eat an Anise seed sometimes !

Rin:

Yeah that's the one.. People would take it in opium dens, which makes me think it was imbibed with opium back in the day.
