Q: Actual GOOD Chinese music?

I mean I know Tang Dynasty is pretty cool, but of course TIC so they never really got too popular...

It seems these folks just listen to whatever new billboard "product" is all the rage along with the worst songs from other parts of the world.

Any Chinese musicians out there with actual artistic integrity?

Yup, but I forget the guy's name. He is referred to as the Taiwanese Rock King and he's absolutely fantastic. I heard him for the first time in the KTV after my Chinese friend got married.

If no-one can help you, I'll ask him next time I see him and send you a post.

He's like Kirk Hammett fused with Bruce Springstein.

Magic.

Well, that really depends on what kind of music you like.

Pop?  Punk? Country? Rap/hip-hop? Classical? Rock? Metal? Folk?

In popular music & bankable artist, I find Wang Fei's work nice, I love some of her tunes. Also, last year, I enjoyed "ni de mama bu xi huan wo", funny lyrics, and accessible to my limited Mandarin skills ^^

There was once this really awesome rock I heard... the guy had a very awesome raspy voice and it sounded very cool.

Unfortunately, someone told me it was actually Korean or Taiwanese. The only "Chinese" music I ever liked and would play to enjoy... wasn't by a Chinese person.... go figure.

I assume you're looking for music that is not mind-numbing like xiao ping guo. I'm somewhat of a Chinese music enthusiast and KTV addict, so I feel somewhat qualified to answer this question. Here's my list:

The Taiwanese rock king mentioned above is probably David Tao (陶喆). He mostly sings soft rock and pioneered the modern Chinese love song genre. Personal favorites include 黑色柳丁,爱很简单,就是爱你,流沙,Melody

Another classic rock group from Taiwan is F.I.R. They play more hard rock music and all of their songs are good.

My personal favorite rock group is Mayday (五月天). They play some more alternative rock

and the lyrics are really deep. Personal favorite songs by them include OAOA, 干杯, 爆肝, 离开地球表面, 倔强, 入阵曲, 哦买噶

A good mainland artist is zhang jie 张杰, he has some good songs and his style is rock or soft rock.

Probably everyone knows Jay Chou 周杰伦. To be honest you can't describe his music other than it's his own genre. Pretty much no two songs are alike and he's made over ten albums. Some are sappy love songs, but others have really deep lyrics.

JJ lin 林俊杰 is also a favorite of mine from Taiwan. Some songs are modern pop/catchy tunes but not obnoxious and overbearing. He also has some rock influences in some of his songs.

The king of pop in China is Zhang Xue You 张学友. He sings Mandarin and Cantonese music. His most famous song is probably 吻别 or 遥远的她.

A classic Cantonese rock group is Beyond if you're into Cantonese music.

The only female artist on my list is G.E.M 邓紫棋. She's all the rage now and she's from Hong Kong. That girl can sing. She sings Mandarin and Cantonese songs.

There are lots more but these are my favorites and go to choices at KTV.

Do you like reggae? 龙神道 are pretty good, as are 山人 (they're more folk rock)

I guess it depends on personal taste, but one of my favorite Chinese singers is SaDingding. She's a little esoteric at times (singing in Mandarin and Tibetan), but lots of fun. Another band I really enjoy is Feng Huang Chuan Qi, who are more upbeat and mix elements of rock and hip-hop.
