Q: Alibaba - where did the name come from?

I don't know why it is called alibaba, there are a lot more than 40 thieves on that thing.

Anyone been ripped off by them?

Haha, nice one OP !

Alibaba is bottom feeder marketplace. Crap factories selling crap. Buy at your own risks.

My protip : one way to avoid being taken for an idiot is to introduce yourself as some big ass potential buyer that's looking for samples before making a decision for a super badass command. Make your story believable, you'll get prime quality. Works everytime. In Rome...

good tip.....I once did just that...passed myself off as a big time business "buyer" and got half a dozen "samples" at a very good price...  great gifts for the family back home at a reasonable price!!!....... gold plated "Year of the _____" things...monkey, horse etc. etc.

Ali Baba was some Persian hero! Like 'Shah el Sha-ham Reza Pahlawi' in 1980tis

Ancient story of 'Alibaba and 40 'robbers' or something similar....

Muslim religion prohibit use of word 'ham' in the name. It means 'Shah on the top of all shahs' in ancient Persian. Talking about bi-GOOG-ngual here.

No, I didn't get ripped off by Ali, butT…. once I went to a shoemaker on the Silk Road in Shanghai. After 3 fittings, 2 pairs of hand made shoes were too small. Money was advanced, and 'no refund in China'. I was contemplating 'stone to the shoemaker's window'.

Don't feel bad!

Now you know how one thief thinks, and argues. This is classic Red Semantics. Guess which tribe teaches him to think and twist interpretations like that?

".....Alibaba -- open sesame. Alibaba -- 40 thieves," Ma said. "Alibaba is not a thief. Alibaba is a kind, smart business person, and he helped the village. So...easy to spell, and global know. Alibaba opens sesame for small- to medium-sized companies. We also registered the name AliMama, in case someone wants to marry us!"
