Q: Of all the shows that are censored on Chinese TV and Internet, why not censor these?

Whats up with the bullfighting shows and UFC fights on regular TV? Is violence not considered as bad as the other contents that are supposedly bad for the morality and culture dating back to 4999.9 years?

Each country have its own customs and traditions.  While you are in your own country, then many shows will not clash with your views.  But when you travel abroad, you may be exposed to shows that could be consider by you to be cruel, or offensive.  Yet, for the citizens of that country, the show is quite popular.

Bullfighting, for example, is a national pastime in Spain and some Latin American countries, yet you find them offensive.  Cock fighting is also very popular in many countries in Central and South America, plus the Caribbean, and it would be my guess that you will find it offensive too.

In France, Germany and Italy, and to some extent in Spain too, nudity on TV programs is acceptable today.  I have even seen ads on TV about brassieres and panties in which the model leaves nothing to the immagination.

Here in China, it is perfectly normal to walk out on the street wearing your PJ's.

What I am trying to point out is that each country is unique in customs and traditions.  And that when we travel, we do tend to see them thru our eyes and our views.  A bigger effort is required in order to accept others as they are, not as we would like them to be.

What do you think other countries will feel when watching American boxing, or American type of football on TV ?

Absolutely agree with HappyExpat about cultural differences, but I need to add one extremely important thing.

It's is perfectly acceptable here in China to show violent things (such as kickboxing or bullfighting) or in movies and TV AS LONG AS IT DOES NOT SHOW CHINESE PEOPLE AS BEING VIOLENT.

They can show Desperate Housewives, but they could never make a Chinese version of that show because it would portray "Chinese people" in a poor light.  So, Chinese people can watch Desperate Housewives because they will take away from it "American women are crazy".  It doesn't "lose face" for China, so no problem.

It's the same when you look at the differences between "America's Got Talent"  or "Britian's Got Talent" and "China's Got Talent" - or "American Idol" and the Chinese equivelent.  In the western versions, half the fun is watching the people who are terrible go in and perform.  This part in China is NEVER shown - only the people who have talent are - because the censors don't want to make China "look bad".

So, in a nutshell, foreign violence and craziness is ok, because it doesn't affect China negatively.  In fact, it's sort of hidden propaganda - look at how violent and crazy foreign-land is, while everything from China is harmonious.  This is also the reason why Chinese TV is usually boring as hell.
