When I say old I mean 70+. There are plenty of retirees who walk around the neighbourhood and chill out in parks. What I don't often see is old people hanging around as much, do they go and live in less polluted places when they get old? Do they just not come out of their houses at all? Is the result of shortened life expectancy in big cities in China?

Haha! Exactly! Or powdered baby formula as they call it here!
I read somewhere that the average age lifespan in China was 70+ So they are probably all just dead.
Chinese don't show age same as Caucasians do. It is very difficult to match Chinese age just by look. Same is with the Black people. They don't 'show' their real age.
In other words, when you think '70 Y old', you are probably seeing much older person.
"they've gone from this place!" .... time machine , great movie the classic and redo
Go to the parks or the neighborhood parks and you'll find quite a handful of them laying on the grass, benches, walking around, sitting play chinese chess and mahjong. You are right though they do tend to stay in cleaner areas.
He he, I said: "cleaner"! (!
